Members T-40 Posted October 13, 2007 Members Posted October 13, 2007 Anybody play short scale basses as their main instrument? I know a few people have 'em sitting around but who actually rocks a short scale bass on a regular basis?
Members Thunderbroom Posted October 13, 2007 Members Posted October 13, 2007 Mike Thumpin' Watt. +1 I don't though.
Members T-40 Posted October 13, 2007 Author Members Posted October 13, 2007 Jack Bruce! My bad. I was actually refering more towards forumites. Although, if Jack is a forumite, that's cool too.
Members T-40 Posted October 13, 2007 Author Members Posted October 13, 2007 +1 I don't though. I thought you had a short scale at one time?
Members Thunderbroom Posted October 13, 2007 Members Posted October 13, 2007 I thought you had a short scale at one time? I do have one. While I have gigged with it once, I don't use it on a regular basis.
Members SpaceGhost Posted October 13, 2007 Members Posted October 13, 2007 word. wooo boy. What year is that EB-0?
Members Guttermouth Posted October 13, 2007 Members Posted October 13, 2007 wooo boy. What year is that EB-0? 1972ish baby!!!:poke:
Members SpaceGhost Posted October 13, 2007 Members Posted October 13, 2007 1972ish baby!!!:poke: I was going to say that! I dig that year because they moved the neck pickup closer to the center of the bass. I'm dying to get a hold of an EB-3 of the same year.
Members GRANKOR Posted October 13, 2007 Members Posted October 13, 2007 yeah that's cool because he pickup isn't slammed at the end of the neck
Members bassman1956 Posted October 13, 2007 Members Posted October 13, 2007 Every so often, this comes out, and gets the snot played out of it for a week or two:
Members Guttermouth Posted October 13, 2007 Members Posted October 13, 2007 yeah that's cool because he pickup isn't slammed at the end of the neck it's hands down the best eb-0 i've ever played.that pickup being moved back definitely fixes the mud issue.
Members Thunderbroom Posted October 13, 2007 Members Posted October 13, 2007 Every so often, this comes out, and gets the snot played out of it for a week or two: Didn't I try to get you to sell me one of those?
Members bassman1956 Posted October 13, 2007 Members Posted October 13, 2007 Didn't I try to get you to sell me one of those? Yes. You, and about 17 others. I've even had a number of unsolicited PM's.
Members Rob Martinez Posted October 13, 2007 Members Posted October 13, 2007 I have quite a few 34" scale basses and a Waterstone Brighton 64 which is GREAT and 32" scale. But lately, I have been favoring the Waterstone Indra bass, which is 30" scale, and an AMAZING instrument! I like short scale as they are easier to play if you sing a lot, which I do in my band. So, ironically, I have gone to using short scale basses as my main bass in the last three months.
Members T-40 Posted October 13, 2007 Author Members Posted October 13, 2007 Coolness.I don't know why I have such a fascination with them.I've often thought about getting a Bronco or an Epi EBO to bang around on.
Members Backstepper Posted October 13, 2007 Members Posted October 13, 2007 Longhorn, short scale goodness. Fantastic tones you won't find in other basses.
Members Optimus Prime Posted October 13, 2007 Members Posted October 13, 2007 How short can they get?
Members bassment zombie Posted October 13, 2007 Members Posted October 13, 2007 How short can they get? Here's an Ashbory. 18 inch scale.
Members Optimus Prime Posted October 13, 2007 Members Posted October 13, 2007 18 inch scale. That's way to short. I'm thinking like guitar size. The 2 times I've actually played a real guitar I was leaning back on a couch and I could play it. Basses are too long to play leaning back on a couch.

So rather than ask, 'how short can they get?', a more useful question to answer your querie would be something like, 'are there are basses offered in a 'guitar-ish scale?' ... Hmm...well, 30 inch scale shorties are very common - easy to find. They're a bit longer scale than guitars (many guitars are what...26-27 inch scale?), but they may be plenty short for you to lean back on the couch and whatnot. The body style also affects your ability to do this - ie, while their scales are the same, a longhorn style instrument would be a bit shorter overall than a more traditional precision/jazz style instrument. I'd recommend you trying out a longhorn for your purposes...I play my longhorn around the house like this all the time. When you find a shop that carries one, you can try your whole lean-back experiment in a chair or something
