Can I reamp an electric guitar with my existing gear?

Recommended Posts

I have a Presonus Firestudio Mobile as my recording interface.

I was thinking about running a clean guitar track out of one of the 1/4 inch outputs on the FS Mobile, then running that signal to an amp, which I would record with a mic and and run back in to the FS Mobile input.

Would this work? Would I need to worry about frying my FS mobile by running out and in simultaneously? Are there impedance issues to consider?

I also own an LR Baggs Para DI as a DI box for live use. Would that help me achieve this goal of reamping? Or do I need a specific piece of new gear for this?

You won't fry your FS Mobile by using inputs and outputs at the same time. There will be impedance issues, but you can go ahead and try it anyway. Set up a track in software so you can lower the volume of the line output with a fader in your DAW. Conventional wisdom says passive DI can be used as a direct box if you connect the direct box in reverse. I have never tried this and don't know if your DI will pass signal that way.

The output from the DAW is Line level and the amp requires Instrument level.

Get yourself an attenuator like this. http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=266-234

and a 1/4" adaptor like this http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=090-285

Then use it between the interface output and guitar amp and it should drop the input signal down enough so

you aren't overdriving the amps input.

the amps input.
