Members catphish Posted October 22, 2007 Members Posted October 22, 2007 Well, I picked up an englehart C-1 today. Here she is: My friend is the music director at a local high school who had their orchestra program terminated about 10 years ago. This has been collecting dust ever since. He gave me this bass to use as long as I want. It seems like it's nearly new. It plays and sounds quite good and you can't beat the price!

That's a long time to sit though for an upright, take a REALLY close look at all the glue seams on it, and especially the neck joint area and fingerboard. Glue will dry out pretty quick on a neglected bass, and if any seams look to be opening up you should get it to a good strings luthier asap. Also get yourself a Dampit humidifier to hang in it to prevent any drying. Winter's up here are murder on uprights!!!

Thanks for the tip on the humidifier! My house can get pretty dry.

My house can get pretty dry. My old upright nearly disintegrated one winter because of that. I was carrying it in it's case and heard a loud thump. Turned out the entire fingerboard popped off and dropped onto the bridge. Even for as brief a time as it was under tension without the fingerboard, the tech had to steam out a warp in the back of the weakened neck. You haven't lived until you watch a luthier completely dismantle every seam on your upright! He did a great job though and it was much better afterwards.
Moderators Kindness Posted October 22, 2007 Moderators Posted October 22, 2007 I've been waiting for this day for a while. Congrats. Keep the humidity in the room that bass stays in above 35% (between 40-50% is ideal). Room humidifiers are the best way. You can buy one at Home Depot that can maintain a preset humidity. It's worth the $30.

Members slapthefunkyfour Posted October 22, 2007 Members Posted October 22, 2007 That's really good for you, and horrible for the school. That sucks that they cancelled the orchestra program.

At least I could rescue this one. Have no fear though, Kanye West's 'Loop Dreams program' will save the Chicago School system by teaching kids to rap and make hip hop music.
Members bassman1956 Posted October 22, 2007 Members Posted October 22, 2007 Dugan, I've had great results with Michelle Fiore at Classic Contrabass (http://www.allthingsbass.com/) as my luthier, if you're looking for one.

Rap, or any other music would not exist without it. I think a real music program is very important in schools. I was concertmaster (1st chair violin) all through junior and high school, and I learned so much from that. It sucks that kids now cannot experience that. Sorry to rain on your parade. It sure is a purdy bass. Do they have any other instruments they are willing to get rid of? I could use a cello.

Don't worry about my parade. I completely understand the sadness of the circumstances under which i got it. I donated one of my old trombones to him years ago, and that's still getting used each year.
