Kudos To Dr. Bass

I recently won an Ashdown Superfly head on eBay. The head runs two separate channels and there is no way to bridge them. Originally, I had decided to get two Avatar 112 cabs to finish out this little mini rig but then decided, I'd like to keep it to one cab if possible.

I emailed Dave at Avatar to see if a Neo 2x12 could be rewired to run each speaker separately so both channels of the Superfly could be run to one cab. Dave's response was negative because of the crossover for the horn and he suggested getting two 112's. This is exactly the opposite of what I wanted to do. Nothing against Avatar though. I understand that Dave is in the business of mass produced cabs and not really a custom builder. I've used their cabs before and they rock. They have also been more than responsive to any questions I have had in the past. They just couldn't do what I was looking for this time.

At Ironfist's suggestion, I contacted Dr. Bass and spoke with Mark. He said that there would be no problem for him to wire up a 2x12 cab to my specs and he would do it at no extra charge. I went ahead and ordered the cab and he said they would start building it after they get back from Bass Player Live this weekend. The Dr Bass cab costs a bit more than the Avatar 2x12 but it will still cost me less than buying two separate 112's. Plus they are covered with a coating similar to truckbed liner rather than tolex or ratfur.

So thanks to Dr. Bass, I will have all 500 watts of that tasty Ashdown goodness rocking through a single 2x12.

He said mid-November so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Good luck with that. It took 3 months to get my RX310 and I still have buzzing issues.

Good to see DrBass praises being sung. Those cabs rock.

I'd like to hear the 2x12.

I'll see if I can make that happen with some MP3's once it gets here. :thu:

I got my Dr. Bass after around 3 months, and it was worth every bit of the wait.

I can't really compare Avatar to anything as I've never played one, but Dr. Bass cabs, for a tiny bit more, definitely sound boutiquey and are of amazingly good quality. If you bought the LineX and speaker upgrades on an Avatar, it'd cost you more than a BL212 would for sure.

He's stopping the RX and RXL cabs to speed things up. What happened to you though,...dang.

Aside from the buzzing, how do you like the cab?

Long story. I got the typical run around from Marc. Three months later it finally arrived. When I got the cab I had a buzz in the upper speaker. Marc didn't have any Beta's in stock so he sent me 2 Delta's. (He said the two left side drivers had to be replaced in a pair. Why I don't know. Impedance maybe?) Well those two Delta's arrived all bent up. (Not Marc's fault...it was Eminences' packaging.) So he sent me two more. I put them in and it sounded O.K. Then later after listening closer the upper left driver (same position) is buzzing again. So now I have a RX310 with two Delta's and one Beta that still isn't right. By the way the Delta's have a blue surround while the Beta's are black...so it looks like a Franken-cabinet right now. I'm about to take one of my 12 gauges to it in the back yard.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm all for Dr Bass cabs, hope your experience with them is positive (I love mine), but you could have just ordered the Avatar and done a little tiny bit of soldering at home and gotten exactly what you want....

Depends on the speakers.

He used to use two 4 ohms wired parallel for his 8 ohm cabs.

I've heard from a couple of sources they are now 16 ohms wired in series.

(I think I got the parallel/series part right)

That may or may not be correct but if it is 16 ohms, then I would have had to pull the speakers and put in new ones at 4 ohms.

It could have been done but I figured if I'm paying for it, I might as well have the cab done the way I want it when it gets here.

Nah. Their time was up. I do wish I would have teamed the RX210 with a RX112 though.
