Members Grumpy_Polecat
Define: 'better' Picture quality is much better on plasma but it ain't cheap. LCD is a great improvement over SD (ntsc) but it has a smaller window (meaning you can't see the picture at certain angles.) Personally I don't think this a good time to buy a set. The prices on the good stuff will come down a LOT in about two more years. Get the biggest Philips SD you can afford (couple hundered bucks at a big-box store) and wait it out. Members willbill0587
The prices on the good stuff will come down a LOT in about two more years Thats because in 2 yrs time, the stuff we have now will be really outdated. There are some good deals going on tho'. It depends if you think that spending the extra cash on an LCD is worth it?

Members rummy
+1 for LCD. I recommend Samsung or Sharp Aquos.
Members bassman1956
LCD's are really good up to about 40", and hard to find in sizes above 42", although there are some out there. Bigger sizes seem to visibly pixelate a lot. to me. Plasmas aren't as good a pic quality as LCD's in smaller sizes, IMO, but outshine them at 40" and above. At 40" or so, really compair picture quality and price and see what you like. Also, plasmas are vastly superior in quality to what they were even 2 or 3 years ago, and don't have the short life or burn-in problems they were once known for. And, in general, they're pricey. If I were to buy today, I'd start at the Sony 40 LCD, and compare from there. 35" to 40" is all I'd want.

Members Perfessor
From what I know the plasma screens have reflections on them and the LCD's are like a computer screen, i.e., no reflection.
Members Mytola
You hardly find any Plasma's at less than 40-ish ", and vice versa with LCD. Plasma usually has better contrast and better blacks. All the stuff about reliability and plasma is pretty much bull{censored} nowadays. No reason that a plasma shouldn't last at least as long as LCD.
Members fretless
someone here posted the life expectancy of a plasma in the last comparison , was it Rowka ? Just watching one for a few hrs a day means it will last many many years . Even leaving it on all day everyday it will still last many years . Old ones were prone to "Burn in " And some had a "white out " feature that would clear the burn in like my Vizio . However I think that the current crop of LCD have better resolution except for the highest priced plasmas , don't quote me though , look into it , especially if you are a gamer . Members mmb
I'm about to purchase a new TV, I need help!! Is a Plasma of LCD better?! What do you want to do with it? Watch movies? Watch fast paced sports? Play games? Plasma has "better" black levels, but LCD is catching up. Plasma can "smear" the image on fast paced video, like hokey pucks, baseball, and during action games. Unless you have a real issue with space, go rear projection or front projection. I've a decent 32" Sony SDTV in the living room and an Infocus DLP front projection system with 101" screen in the movie room downstairs. No question where I'd rather watch movies, sports or play games. SD tv shows, I don't really care which screen they are on.

When we bought our house a few years back, we bought a 32" discontinued Phillips and have been very satisfied. We watch an occasional DVD via S-Video and really enjoy the quality. After growing up with VHS on 19" sets, this is fudging great! I have a good friend with a setup very similar to T-Brooms, and it's a riot to watch concert DVDs on...but we just don't watch enough TV to justify it. Members lug
I have this and this and this.. The mount is a POS but I got it to work. +1 The new 1080p projectors are coming down in price. There is a nice Optima for 3 bills that is good enough for up to 150" screen. That 12.5 feet of video goodness! THINK OF THE PORNO POSSIBILITIES!
Members RSBro
I went big screen hunting last fall, and ended up with the last run of Hitachi UltraVisions, for that same design/model. Got a 55" RPLCD in HD for $1099 walkout, with home delivery and stand from Circuit City.If I'd have waited about 2 mo's longer, the Sony SXRD's dropped a lot in price, but they were still kinda new at the time, and while it's nice, it wasn't double the cost of mine nice. But right now, unless you go ultra high-end w/ Mitsubishi or Pioneer, the 50" Sony SXRD is the best you can get for the money. I have no complaints about mine. Considering you almost pay that much for the crap RCA's at Wal-Mart, I got a great deal. Closeouts are the way to go!
Moderators Kindness Posted October 23, 2007 Moderators Share Posted October 23, 2007 Sony SXRD. Plasma is a dying technology for many good reasons. LCD will be the temporary reigning technology before long if it isn't already.
