Members willsellout Posted October 27, 2007 Members Posted October 27, 2007 So....whens it gonna get here huh???I've talked a lot of smack about Rickenbacker in the past. We will see if I eat my words:D. And thanks to US for hooking me up with a beautiful Midnight Blue Ric..Dan
Members timmerz Posted October 27, 2007 Members Posted October 27, 2007 A Ric is on my list to try, along with any Lakland bass..... I have heard them in the past, and been impressed on occasion, but just fear that they may be one-trick ponies capable of a narrow band of tones....
Members Undead Sycip Posted October 27, 2007 Author Members Posted October 27, 2007 What makes a Ric different is the absence of "index points" where you would normally rest your thumb for some styles of playing. I for one found that I can't gallop very well on it because my style needs a solid thumb anchor for galloping. But between two pups and independent V-T controls for each, the Ric is hardly a one trick pony.I can't wait for my next one to get here next month

Members willsellout Posted October 27, 2007 Members Posted October 27, 2007 Oh, no he didn't! Yup...the 2Tek beast has been slain by my SB2. Of course the Hamer is a killer bass, it's just doesn't do anything the SB2 can't and I'm not in a financial position to keep basses unfortunately.

Not to sound derisive but I find that all basses only sound like the basses they are. By that, I've never heard a Fender P not sound like a Fender P or magically sound like a Jazz bass. They sound nothing alike. The way you alter your technique allows you to cover more tonal ground, with any instrument - Rickenbackers included.

No double-blind test here, just a VERY surprised initial impression from an old school Chris Squire and Geddy Lee fan who expected his new 4003 to have a very different sound than it does. That said, I play mostly fingerstyle, in front of the pickup cover, with the pickup switch in the middle.
Members Undead Sycip Posted October 27, 2007 Author Members Posted October 27, 2007 Chris Squier's Ric had a dead bridge pup for many years.

I can imagine so - considering your settings and technique/attack. Both pickups on full and your right hand playing fingerstyle in front of the pickup cover...makes sense. Try the following to experience different tones: - rolling off the neck pickup ~20% or so...more to your taste, if you like.- soloing bridge pickup- changing right hand attack locationetc.

My mistake, I worded that poorly. A Ric can cop a P tone but it's still a Ric. A P will sound like a P, a J will sound like a J, a MTD will sound like an MTD, etc. To me, If I can't get a bass to work, it says more about my playing then the bass itself.

Thank ya very much...although I got up early today to check on it and i said it left Portland at 3am...so I'm not sure what time it will be here:confused:. Members justinbass Posted November 1, 2007 Members Posted November 1, 2007 I hate the waiting game. Oh, and congrats.
Moderators Kindness Posted November 1, 2007 Moderators Posted November 1, 2007 Congrats man! How is it? +1 - that {censored}'s "delivered"
Members willsellout Posted November 1, 2007 Members Posted November 1, 2007 It arrived! But since I don't have a camera it doesn't really exist...so let me give you my impressions of a bass that doesn't exist: So if it arrived it would have arrived with flats (not sure what kind but they are sticky so I think SS?) and the action is a bit higher than I like, most likely because of the trip from Cali to Oregon. I would have plugged the bass in initially and been kind of disappointed in the volume..and then realized I had my amp set for my SB2 which has the hottest pickups in the world. I quickly would have adjusted the gain and volume on my amp and then POW:love:. I have never heard anything like this thing...it can get mellow but it is what I hoped it would be...a nasty nasty little bitch! Even with flats on! It is the tone I have been searching for for a long time. I was looking for it in a distortion box, or in a boost, or a tube amp or whatever else...but here it is on a 60 watt Ashdown combo:eek:. I think I can tell you with some amount of certainty that this thing will not be leaving my posession ever. It's the most beautiful bass I own, bar none, and like I said the tone is pure and simple; incredible! I really kind of expected the bass to not have any ass behind it, but it has loads of bottom end and sickeningly creamy overdrive(??) to it that just fascinates me. I am actually bringing my practice rig down stairs to play with it some more. I will try and take some pictures with the camera on the Mac but the bass will look like a lefty..don't let that freak you out:). My god, I am still in shock..I haven't been taken aback by a bass like this since I first got the SB2...and I think you all know how much I love that bass...Anyway, thanks to Undead Sycip for hooking a brother up...it is incredible! Dan

Dan i want that bass since almost the day i started playing (only the 4001 instead of the 4003)... youre giving me so much GAS congrats, though!
Members Undead Sycip Posted November 1, 2007 Author Members Posted November 1, 2007 Whoops. I forgot to tell you that it's loaded with my standard strings. Ernie Ball flats (Uhh.. I dunno why they're sticky... honest...).Give the neck time to settle down before you start turning screws and such. Read deep into the the manual if you want to tweak the set up.Anyhoo, am glad you liked it you puddle jumper. Take care of her! And here's a pic for you guys:
Members willsellout Posted November 1, 2007 Members Posted November 1, 2007 i want that bass since almost the day i started playing (only the 4001 instead of the 4003)... youre giving me so much GAS congrats, though! I'm the exact opposite, I always thought Ric's were kind of ugly..in fact I still think the Jetglo's are ugly. I do enjoy the Fireglo, but the blue is my favorite..it looks so classy and soo good it's hard to imagine a more beautiful bass. Now with that gushing does come some difficulties with the bass..really I am going to have to get used to the fatness of the neck...it really feels huge in my hands. The second thing is hand placement when playing...the thumbrest that US fashioned isn't going to work for me..and neither is the full cover. I am going to need to figure that one out as I play it more. I am letting it warm up and acclimate so I can give it a setup and get the action where I want it..I am also going to toss on some new rounds and she should be good to go:thu:Dan
