Members e4c4ever
I recently played a Ken Smith bass and fell in love with the tone. It's a five string bass with active pickups... The price is around 3000.00!!! Too much! Can any of you guys give me some opinons on a good 4 string bass with active pups at a reasonable price? Looking for that smooth, deep thump sound. I don't slap, just play with a pick (no fingers). Gracias!
Members sunburstbasser
Check out Cort's Artisan basses. I think the B4 or A4 would be pretty close both in price and tone to what you want.
Members Low Tone
Look at Dean Basses. http://www.deanguitars.com/basses.htm Probably one of the most underrated companies out there. Ibanez has a few nice models in that price range as well Could also pick up a used active fender for that scratch.

Members Derek5272
As far as midrange active basses, go, I'd say get an Ibanez. Or maybe a MusicMan SUB with active pickups. I've never played an active SUB, but I don't think you can go wrong with a MM Though it looks like the SUB line is discontinued...

Members bassman1956
In that range, you can get an MTD Kingston, great bass for the money!
Members jasper383
"Smooth, deep thump" and active pickups? Why not a used MIA or MIJ P Bass? Put flats on it, and your smooth, deep thump requirements will be met.
