Members danbronson Posted October 28, 2007 Members Posted October 28, 2007 Hey, let me know what you think of this. I'm playing (my interpretation of) a Chili Peppers riff from the bridge of Otherside. Not sure if I'm playing it correctly but whatever. The bass is my new SX SPJ Ash. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2195/1766609597_1dfc6bf8aa_o.jpg I recorded the bass directly into my Firepod, into my PC, into Cubase SX. No amp sims or external preamps were used. I normalized the track to 0dB. I then copied the recorded track and placed another after it, adding EQ (dipped around 1000 Hz and a low cut that looks like about 25 Hz), compression (VST Dynamics which apparently sucks but hell, I can't tell the difference, 8 dB with a limiter), a tiny bit of reverb which I'm not a huge fan of on bass but it seems to help a bit, and Waves MaxxBass (a plugin that reorganizes harmonics to give the illusion of deeper bass, a little secret weapon I suppose) in that order. This'll give you an idea of what the bass sounds like on it's own and what it can sound like with a little tweaking. Feel free to critique my tone and my playing (which I know is not the best!) I've officially been a bassist for a day now so I'm not too worried if you tear me a new one! Thanks for listening.

You're a {censored}ing prodigy. Bass Jesus has arrived. Tell the magistrate.
Members willsellout Posted October 28, 2007 Members Posted October 28, 2007 It aint perfect but you can recognize it definitely. It sounds good for sure though..good job! Dan
Members danbronson Posted October 28, 2007 Author Members Posted October 28, 2007 Well, I've played basses before, but never owned one. I've been a guitarist for 6 or 7 years now. I certainly am not a prodigy, but thanks for the kind words. I've got a long way to go before I'm as good as I'd like to be.

I wouldn't've had that sort of styley goodness at "real" day one, even though I had played bass before. You're the {censored} for a beginner, to say the least. I don't do "kind words", pal. Only honesty, either factual or "as I see it". Good recording.

Members UK_Lefty Posted October 28, 2007 Members Posted October 28, 2007 Sounds similar to how I play it... What do you think of the bass? I'm considering buying one. Can you get a real deep powerful punch-you-in-the-chest tone from it?
Members hawkhuff Posted October 28, 2007 Members Posted October 28, 2007 It's a good one. I am impressed by the tone of that bass. I assume it is stock, no mods, right? If so it's one hell of a sound. Good recording too. :thu:

So far I like it, but I have no field of reference as it's the only bass I've ever owned. I think it could be set up a bit better, so I'll see what I can do with it but first I'm going to let the wood adjust to the temperature and humidity of my house. UK_Lefty, what you hear is what you get. I can't compare it to any other basses but this clip is direct into the computer. First no processing, then a bunch of stuff thrown on. So that's it's "deep powerful punch-you-in-the-chest tone" without an amp. I like it, I'm able to achieve the big, round, transparent tone I like so much with some minor EQing.
