Members EthanLewis Posted October 29, 2007 Members Posted October 29, 2007 Just stumbled upon a 1962 Jazz bass today. The idiot re-painted the bass and put a different pick guard on it, but everything else is original. The shop is asking five grand for it. Is this a decent deal or should i keep searching around.. I will have to give up my les paul custom and my Alembic bass as well. Is this to much to give up for a piece of pre-cbs history?!? The thing plays like a freaking dream! but i don't want to throw away guitars that i love.....
Members Guttermouth Posted October 29, 2007 Members Posted October 29, 2007 no way in hell i would pay 5 grand for a refin just because it's pre cbs. now, if it plays 5 thousand dollars good and you wanna buy it as a good player- then that's a different story.but, it will never be a collector grade bass because of the refin . if i was looking for something for investment purposes i would keep on walking.
Members PaulyWally Posted October 29, 2007 Members Posted October 29, 2007 Yeah... I don't know. I can't imagine any instrument being worth $5K. If some collector wants to pay that much to put it in a glass box... fine. But I've played basses from $200 to $2000 that played great. And I've never played an instrument that was worth THAT much more. $3000?Maybe. $4000? Eh. Five?No way. I'd have to be something pretty damn special. And I've never played any instrument THAT special. I also have a problem with trading instruments in. Especially trading in 2 to get 1. Unless you just don't like the instrument.
Members Thumper Posted October 29, 2007 Members Posted October 29, 2007 Check out the prices of pre-CBS Jazz Basses. $5k is a steal, assuming the rest is original. A decent shop can give it a period refinish, and you could flip it for $8k or more. I'm not saying I'd pay that kind of money, but the market will. For example: http://elderly.com/vintage/names/fender-jazz-bass-%281964%29--55U-3919.htm

If everything else is original, I'll buy the damn thing. I've seen them go on eBay for 10-15K and those didn't look like any prize to me.

Members L-1329 Posted October 29, 2007 Members Posted October 29, 2007 but i don't want to throw away guitars that i love..... Don't ever throw away guitars that you love. You will ALWAYS regret it and you'll never be able to recoupe/replace them. Ever. And especially not for an old fender in need of a lot of refin work.
