Members sm5719 Posted October 29, 2007 Members Posted October 29, 2007 need some help on deciding on buying an acoustic bass. our band is thinking of playing some acoustic sets, 1 guy in the band said he'd prefer i just continue to play the fender jazz (connected) for shows but an acoustic would be cool around the bonfire etc...., another guy says acoustics just aren't worth buying unless you get a high dollar one (grand +). thoughts? i do know of an acoustic alvarez rb30c with a case for $225. any thoughts on those?
Members Poltergeist Posted October 29, 2007 Members Posted October 29, 2007 its fun, for that price, you cant miss it... go for it... i wish i would find one with case at that price!
Members basschick22 Posted October 29, 2007 Members Posted October 29, 2007 the alvarez acoustic basses that I've played were pretty decent. They have a decent tone, and for that price, sounds like a good deal.
Members sm5719 Posted October 29, 2007 Author Members Posted October 29, 2007 i guess at that price i can't really lose. but if it's only worth playing around a fire.....what's the point? the one thing i noticed on the only acoustic bass i played was that they it didn't project very good, is that just because it was a low end model?
Members rummy Posted October 29, 2007 Members Posted October 29, 2007 Of course, you should! As sm5719 said, I bet you would till need an amp even around a bon fire.
Members PrestiaRules Posted October 29, 2007 Members Posted October 29, 2007 I use my ABG for practice at home...in particular figuring out lines etc right in front of the computer. No need to plug in or worry about chords etc. Just grab and play. Great for noodling while posting or watching a movie as well. As for campfire the only ABG I heard that was loud enough for that was a Tacoma and that will be just over a grand...but kick much ass....
Members jackcheez Posted October 29, 2007 Members Posted October 29, 2007 Get an acoustic bass ! They're great for porch music. For gigs you'll still use an amp. Here's my porch music instrument.

Members Apendecto Posted October 29, 2007 Members Posted October 29, 2007 I've got a Martin B-2 or something. It's a great bass with great electronics but it's not great for jamming with anyone when you're not plugged in. So if you are going to have to plug in anyway stick with the Jazz. But the bass you are looking at is cheap so if you need it for the look go for it but if you need it found sound go play it first. Yo.
Members justinbass Posted October 29, 2007 Members Posted October 29, 2007 Acoustic basses are useless when played without amplification. Even around a campfire, you won't be heard over a guitarist playing with a pic.
Members sm5719 Posted October 29, 2007 Author Members Posted October 29, 2007 thx for the input all. sounds like they are cool to mess around with, but on stage a jazz will sound better and around the fire an acoustic won't be heard. so that leaves just for sh!t's and giggles. i guess i'm gonna run up to the local GC and see if they have one in stock (the used one i could buy is about an hour drive) and give it a test run. i got the money for it, but maybe i'd be better off upgrading a bass or cab or amp or something.
Members 78pbass Posted October 29, 2007 Members Posted October 29, 2007 I had that bass and it just didnt compete with other instruments. thus, I sold it. If you want an ABG that works in that environment: http://kansascity.craigslist.org/msg/454692719.html
Members jackcheez Posted October 29, 2007 Members Posted October 29, 2007 is that a 2001RB and a 800RB or do you have the 800 and the preamp? It's a 1000RB. That pic is from 10 years ago.
Members Poltergeist Posted October 29, 2007 Members Posted October 29, 2007 oh! it was bigger back then, uh? which sounds better?
Members sm5719 Posted October 29, 2007 Author Members Posted October 29, 2007 btw, kept forgetting to put equip in sig.....
Members jackcheez Posted October 29, 2007 Members Posted October 29, 2007 oh! it was bigger back then, uh? which sounds better?I like the 800RB. It's a bit warmer and organic sounding. I never really liked the 100RB.
Members mrcrow Posted October 29, 2007 Members Posted October 29, 2007 dont acoustics come with...erm..electronics somewhere inside that great barn of a body?
Members Poltergeist Posted October 29, 2007 Members Posted October 29, 2007 the 1000RB was never that good... the newer models are awesome though... do you power up all those cabs with that single 800?
Members Spin Cycle Posted October 29, 2007 Members Posted October 29, 2007 Go URB- the original acoustic bass.
Members jackcheez Posted October 29, 2007 Members Posted October 29, 2007 do you power up all those cabs with that single 800?Sure. 300 watts to the 2 X 12 and 100 watts to the 2 X 10. Worked good. For then.
Members lug Posted October 29, 2007 Members Posted October 29, 2007 here's the ticket! Ernie Ball Earthwood bss, good luck finding one.
Members Poltergeist Posted October 29, 2007 Members Posted October 29, 2007 Sure. 300 watts to the 2 X 12 and 100 watts to the 2 X 10. Worked good. For then. what do you mean... that head has only 300W of power... isnt that 200 to one and 100 to the other?
Members jackcheez Posted October 29, 2007 Members Posted October 29, 2007 what do you mean... that head has only 300W of power... isnt that 200 to one and 100 to the other?Wrong. POWER
Members Poltergeist Posted October 29, 2007 Members Posted October 29, 2007 so, imagine i was plugging a 1001RBII, which, in european amps, has 480W at 8 ohms, and i was plugging it into two cabs at 8 ohms (imagine they are both 300W at 8ohms), how much power would i get to each?
