I thought it was going to be a funk, reggae and rock project with Latin influences, but it was a straight up Latin band.

It went alright once I got the hang of the rhythms, but I don't think it's what I want to do.

The guitarist wasn't there, and he doesn't speak English. He called towards the end of the jam, and I picked up 3 things from the conversation he had with the drummer:

-He plays well

-He's a white guy

-He don't know {censored} about Latin music. :D

I'm not going to take the gig if they offer it to me, but I discovered a major weak spot in my repertoire that I'm going to explore more in-depth. So it was a good experience for me.

I've done a very little amount of Latin playing. There are some grooves in there that just don't come naturally for someone that has grown up on pop/rock. It would not be my thing either, to play or to listen to, but it is cool music.

It didn't come naturally to me at ALL. He kept telling me to play less funky, which is a request I've never heard before.:D

So they were indeed the real deal, and the drummer was incredible. They want me to come back tonight, but I'm going to decline, because even though it would make me a better player to learn these songs, my heart just wouldn't be into it, and they're looking for someone that wants to move forward with the band. I don't want to lead them to think I'm into it and then bail, you know?

I totally get it. That music is not me. I'd be into it for the learning experience for some time, then I'd get sick of the music, sick of the scene, and be shopping around. Then I'd ditch the band like you got ditched. You're a good man for passing.

Who, besides me, finds this humorous only two weeks after C7 was accused of being a latino hater?
:D

Me! :D

Latin music is great, but I don't think I'd be into the gigs, especially since all the lyrics will be in Spanish. Plus, there's just something...wrong...about a chubby white guy on stage with a group of Brazilian and Dominican dudes. :D

I also would have very little to contribute creatively, since it's pretty much an alien style to me as a player. They would constantly be on me for playing on the one. :D

There is no opportunity for this around here but I would love to play in this band. They bill themselves as Soulsa and the Latin Tower of Power. She is a hot performer and with a good amount of nasty.

I love the name The Wild Clams. There signature song is Slam The The Clam...the dirty lyrics aren't just a novelty, the song really grooves.

Slam the clam

Slam the clam man

Slam the clam, YEAH! ( 4)

The Latin band scene around here smokes! Really the only live music in this area that attracts anything resembling a crowd. Too bad it's a pretty closed scene, and white players generally don't get called.

I just talked to him and told him what my thoughts were, but what's cool is that I was able to refer him to a guy that I worked with at the guitar shop, a guy from Caracas, Venezuela. Hopefully they can get together, because I know this guy understands the Latin groove a whole lot better than I do.

I guess I didn't bomb the audition, he was bummed I didn't want to come back...

Probably me!! :)

I am Latino, but I play 50s rock, so there is something to be said for what C7 has already said. I don't play bass for Latin music bands in NM because I just don't play that groove. The music probably is more fun for ther drummer, all kinds of interesting fills and syncopated stuff.

Sounds like a thread I read about a guy being recruited to play in a Billy Joel cover band. Interesting, probably a musical lesson, but no thanks. Or, No Gracias!

Dude, it's all about the Clave. (Klah-Vay).

Call and reply. You see the pattern in all kinds of African influenced music.

Get yourself a wife beater, some chinos, and a hat and your in.:poke:

Absolutely. I "hear" it, but I want to sing with it, not respond to it. It's just a learned instinct that is tough to break.

I'd be interested to give something like that a shot. The jazz ensemble has been doing a lot of Latin stuff recently and I'm really liking it.

I faked my way through a LOT of Latin gigs on bass playing basslines by reading the chart/chord figure and playing a good bulk of the songs with a triad or arpeggio having a dotted quarter, dotted quarter, quarter notation. Was it right? Well, no...Did I get paid and get called to do more gigs? Yup :thu:

That's the right way, respect.

Latin stuff is awsome though, and very challenging.

. Not pure Latin, but the influences are obvious, and the guy has groove coming out of his ears...

Dayum... that guy knows his way around a URB doesn't he.

Never head of him before but I'll be looking for more of his stuff now for sure.

Thanks for the pointer

Hey Josh - way to represent, dude....you're the man..

If you ever do want to explore the genre, I have some method books and cds that I'd be glad to lend you....

At this very moment I'm building my next band...it will be a latin flavored jazz quartet....and we'll be doing some straight ahead salsa and other latin styles...plus putting a little twist on some of the standards

I've got a couple of young players lined up and am hoping to make this a steady working band....

Anyway....way to nail the audition....it's good to see you getting out :thu:

It all works out in the end, dude.
:thu:

Word. I don't mope, I get pissed off and motivated to issue the Money Shot when things like that happen. Nothing would please me more than to be in another kick ass band and on stage a month or two after they ditched me like that.

My wife and I went to dinner with the guitar player from ML, and his wife last week. I told him I'd already had 2 auditions (this was 4 days after the breakup). He was dumbstruck that I didn't even wait a week. What was he expecting, a months-long mourning process? :D

I'm not the most talented player, but I {censored}ing live for this {censored}. IMO the band that I join up with will be fortunate to find me, not because I'm The Supreme Bass Talent, but because I push and push and push. Bitches. :D

If you'd like to lend those to me, I'd appreciate it for sure. I need some style variants, I've become a one-dimensional, fingerstyle funk machine.
:D

C7

You mean a one-fingered funk-dimension push-push machine.....:D

Well - I'll make a little inventory of stuff and send it over...see if there's anything that catches your eye...
