Members skatalite Posted November 6, 2007 Members Posted November 6, 2007 Sure, it can be used for extra distortion or just simply tone modulation, but what do you all think? I'll be trying them together tomorrow for the heck of it!
Members willsellout Posted November 6, 2007 Members Posted November 6, 2007 You shouldn't need any help with the tone, but if you want distortion...I don't see why it would be bad. Dan
Members REMUS Posted November 6, 2007 Members Posted November 6, 2007 No, as long as you like it dude i'm cool with it If you started painting it brown or something then I might have a word with ya lol
Members bassman1956 Posted November 6, 2007 Members Posted November 6, 2007 I've done it with the YBA200 for just that reason. Maybe it's not the best solution, and even sacrilegious to some, but it did what I wanted it to.
Members SpaceGhost Posted November 6, 2007 Members Posted November 6, 2007 I don't think so. A tube amp and a Sansamp sound like two different things and variety is always a good thing.
Members LanEvo Posted November 6, 2007 Members Posted November 6, 2007 Sure, it can be used for extra distortion or just simply tone modulation, but what do you all think?I used to have a SansAmp BDDI box. I thought it sounded great plugged into a board...but pretty crappy loaded into the front end of my amp (SWR Red Head combo). If all you want is distortion, there are probably better options. Emre

But I've yet to try it with my 400+, though I'll do so tomorrow. Just to experiment.
Members guitargod0dmw Posted November 6, 2007 Members Posted November 6, 2007 I'm not sure if it would work very well. All of my fx...including my SA don't sound too hot in front of my tube amp. It's almost like the tubes suck up the fx...but never spit it back out! Give it a shot and see how it works for you. If it does, then keep it!
Members fealach Posted November 6, 2007 Members Posted November 6, 2007 I've done it. Kick in the Sansamp, and it sucks the tubey sound completely away, making the 400+ sound much more crisp, scooped, and soulless. If you need variety, you'll get that, it sounds liek a totally different amp. It made the 8 string bass sound clearer and more distinct, with just the 400+ it got a bit mushy. I think the BDDI as a "tube emulator" is laughable, but it's very useful in front of a tube amp, besides the DI could be useful. Also, the BDDI has 2 outputs IIRC - I used to run one into each of the 2 inputs on the 400+ and use both channels. They work well together.
Members FreestyleIntruder Posted November 6, 2007 Members Posted November 6, 2007 No I think if you like it, just do it, and {censored} whatever anyone else says
Members Benjamin Posted November 7, 2007 Members Posted November 7, 2007 NO!!! You should instead use an MXR M-80 Bass DI+ or some other distortion pedal. The SansAmp might work, but I am incredibly biased against them
Members skatalite Posted November 7, 2007 Author Members Posted November 7, 2007 Well, tried it, and didn't like it too much. The distortion could be good but since I don't use distortion much I won't need it. Plus, the SansAmp seems to suck the life out of the 400+, tone-wise. If I had more time to mess with it (I only tinkered around for about 20 minutes) I'm sure I might have found something. Plus, my pups are too hot and there was some mad squealing going on. However, I did find my tone with my SX Jazz w/ SD Quarter Pounders + Gotoh 201... The graphic EQ on the 400+ looks hilarious, but the tone with the band sounds radtacular. Mid: 10Bass: 6Treble: 6Master: 5Volume: 4, pulledInput 2 Graphic EQ: 40Hz: 3/4 up100: 1/2 up250: 1/4 up625: flat1560: max3900: max6600: max Funny looking, but it gets me what I want in the mix. Mmmm.
Members Benjamin Posted November 7, 2007 Members Posted November 7, 2007 Good stuff! If you do what some grind with that 400+ though, you couldn't go wrong with an MXR M-80. They're a totally different animal to a SansAmp.
Members fealach Posted November 7, 2007 Members Posted November 7, 2007 I always hated the Sansamp's distortion. Always sounded too fake for me. I had that off, and set the EQ on the Sansamp pretty much flat. Yes, it did suck the life out of the 400+, but it resulted in a tone useful for some songs. I'll agree the M-80 has a much better distortion, I actually like that one.
