Members Psilocybin Posted November 6, 2007 Members Posted November 6, 2007 I would like to have 1-2 gigs of RAM when I'm done but don't want to buy the ass rape priced stuff that was on the site I checked with. If anyone could link me what they think might be suitable memory for this computer (to be used for gaming) that would be awesome. The computer I'm looking to upgrade the RAM on is: Dell Dimension 8200 series (400MHz FSB) desktop PC It has 4 slots but is only equipped with 2 sticks of 256MB. The cpu is Intel Pentium 4, 1.7 ghz. CPU speed is 1694 MHz. It also said I need a memory with support for PC800 speeds. I have no idea if I need DDR or DDR2 ram, or some other thing. I know jack about this subject.
Members 82Daion Posted November 6, 2007 Members Posted November 6, 2007 You have a computer that accepts RDRAM. RDRAM is insanely expensive($229 for 512mb), so do the math as far as what you'd be spending to upgrade to your desired spec. For example, this stuff. I'd be looking at a new computer-it will make things much easier (and cheaper) in the long run, as RDRAM is an outdated standard that never really saw wide adoption. The prices aren't ass-rape-that's just what the stuff costs.
Members HackedByChinese! Posted November 6, 2007 Members Posted November 6, 2007 Buy a new computer. You will be paying around $500/gig for RDRAM, which is an absolutely dead technology on the desktop. Do not, under any circumstances, spend any more money on it.
Members Renfield Posted November 6, 2007 Members Posted November 6, 2007 I agree. Keep it and relegate it to running your music, chat and all that while you play games on your more advanced system, keeping its system free and clear to focus on the game itself.
Members Bluescout Posted November 6, 2007 Members Posted November 6, 2007 Give a look around. Online retailers, eBay, CL, you might find an acceptable deal: http://www.pricewatch.com/memory/pc800_256mb.htm http://www.pricewatch.com/memory/pc800_512mb.htm They have to be installed in pairs so I'd suggest a pair of 256 to bring you to 1G total.

Members J. Posted November 6, 2007 Members Posted November 6, 2007 Yeah, I'd check eBay and craigslist for a fire sale if you really wanted to pick some up on the cheap. It's really a matter of luck in that case.

It guided memory upgrade function made my life so easy. It told me what model numbers of Kingston memory would be compatible with my Dell Model! I upgraded from 512 in two bays to 1 G x 2 (2.0 G upgrade) which added to my existing 512 gave me 2.5 G of ddr 2 ram. My computer is light speed now.
