Members ToeJamFootball Posted November 7, 2007 Members Posted November 7, 2007 Which one would you go for and why?
Members REMUS Posted November 7, 2007 Members Posted November 7, 2007 SVT-II I guess, but there is nothing in it... I would have to flip a coin if both came up for the same price.

Members REMUS Posted November 7, 2007 Members Posted November 7, 2007 I meant second hand, the sandberg is the first thing i've had new in a LONG time

Members REMUS Posted November 7, 2007 Members Posted November 7, 2007 that sucks, they come up maybe once a month in the UK on average I would say. maybe snag one from the US and get it modded?
Members skatalite Posted November 7, 2007 Members Posted November 7, 2007 I've played through both and decided to go with the 400+. Why? Well, I thought it was built better, for one, and I enjoyed its tone a bit more. Also seemed more powerful. Oh, and I found the 400+ for a good price, used.
Members REMUS Posted November 7, 2007 Members Posted November 7, 2007 I think they are quite similar from clips i've heard, the SVT is just more dirty sounding imo. From your posts, I would say you would be happier with the 400+.
Members FreestyleIntruder Posted November 7, 2007 Members Posted November 7, 2007 The Mesa. Because it would be worth more when I came to sell it. Which I would do. Straight away.
Members Bass8987 Posted November 7, 2007 Members Posted November 7, 2007 I've never played the Mesa, hell I've never played any Mesa Boogie stuff before. But the Ampeg SVT-II is a really good head. I played one with the 810E played through a Stingray 5 and it was teh sex!
Members fealach Posted November 7, 2007 Members Posted November 7, 2007 I've owned both, liked both, and sold both. IMO, it's a coin toss. My SVT II Pro was louder than my 400+, can't speak for any other individual amps. Both sounded great. The 400+ had a cleaner, clearer sound - but not terribly clear objectively, it's a slightly murky sounding amp by nature. The Ampeg had that sweet, smooth, monstrous distortion. Sure, it could do clean too, but I preferred the Mesa's clean and the Ampeg's distortion was so good, I didn't really try to tweak the clean tone since I didn't use it clean. I like that the 400+ can take a single 8 Ohm cab. The Ampeg had an adjustable bias, with lights on the back. I sold the Ampeg first, but only because I had an offer I would have been stupid to pass up for it. The Mesa which I sold later I sold because I wasn't using it any more.
Members been_effected Posted November 8, 2007 Members Posted November 8, 2007 Mesa. I hate Ampeg on principle. You aren't seriously thinking of pairing an Ampeg up with that lovely SWR 412 cab are you? :'(
Members wotamess Posted November 8, 2007 Members Posted November 8, 2007 ampeg purely because of rex brown who pwns all ATM, IMO... DOWN III: over the under anyone? {censored}it, i'm gonna start a thread! -wam-
Members guitargod0dmw Posted November 8, 2007 Members Posted November 8, 2007 Mesa. Their stuff is so good it's not even funny. I have never not been impressed with one of their amps/cabs...whether it be for bass or guitar.
Members wotamess Posted November 8, 2007 Members Posted November 8, 2007 the only time i heard a mesa 400+ was at a My Morning Jacket gig earlier this year, and it was, without a doubt, the WORST bass tone i've ever heard. there must have been a sound engineer/artist/settings/venue problem, as i have no doubt it's a fantastic amp, but yeah... the sound sucked!

What bass was he playing? Was it Fender-ish? That'll ruin ANY good setup! EDIT: Oh, and btw- my nice little deal on a Mesa Powerhouse 210+212 setup is about closed!
Members Onkel Bob Posted November 8, 2007 Members Posted November 8, 2007 Didn't you already have a Traynor?
Members Poltergeist Posted November 8, 2007 Members Posted November 8, 2007 i love the tones on the Mesa, it has a tone that can take down buildings, it cuts through like butter, its really punchy and powerful.... the Ampegs i like are the old ones... but there is no comparison to be made between those two really, its like comparing a cat to a whale... go for the Ampeg if youre into that classic, fat, warm tone... go for the Mesa if youre looking for something else (although with the Mesa you can get really fat tones)...
