There's a GK 800RB for sale in my area now. He wants $400 A bit much. We'll see if he'll deal.

The megabass is if i'm not mistaken only 200 watts into 4 ohms right?

THAT HEAD IS THE MOST BRUTAL THING EVER!!!

its also worth that price... try to talk him down to 350 though...

i actually loooove that head paired with an ampeg 8x10... its an exception :cop:

I could be wrong, but I seem to remember they were 200 watts into 4 ohms per channel. That was their big shtick. There weren't all that many amps around in those days (15 years ago) that offered a good crossover and a couple of hundred watts per side. These were very popular for bi-amp rigs back in those days.

In your case, you'll be driving a single 4 ohm cab with a power rating of around 450 watts. So, a head that sends out ~400 watts bridged into 4 ohms would seem like a pretty good match. Especially if you can pick one up for $120: http://www.musicgoround.com/gear/inventorydetails.asp?id=426962

Well my concerns are different from His. He is almost 18, almost 6' and ready to take on the world. I'm 50, 5'7" and ready to take on another glass of wine.

Transportation is not a problem for either of us Truck and a van. So size does not matter for him, but weight does matter for me. (I used a Mesa 400+ for awhile and hated the weight)

For him Sound is probably the main priority again he's hardcore/post alternative.

Second is cost. He is prepared to spend about $2000.

For me sound is a priority but cost is a major factor as well. Jazz/Funk/R&B

Okay, 1st priority is sound. Because of his inexperience with proper geear, I suggest getting a rig he can grow into and not easily grow out of...ESPECIALLY when spending that kind of $$$.

His safest bet is to simply invest into timeless standards, such as the Ampeg SVT Classic, & GK 800RB. However, the SWR SM500, Trace Elliot AH500 have SUCH a heritage, it'd be foolish not to consider them as well.

The SVT Classic is all tube. The 800RB & AH500 are all tranny. The SM500 is hybrid. So, your next step is to decide if you want all tube, all tranny, or jhybrid. Because weight is a concern, that quickly puts the SVT Classic at the back of the list, and the 800RB towards the top. Because cost is a concern, that keeps the 800RB towards the top. As for sound, well, again, the 800RB sounds as good as any of them, just different. As I've mentioned before, don't discount MarkBass or GenzBenz as well. Like saying green is better than blue. No, green is not better than blue, just different. Green can compliment blue, however. ;)

Once, you've decided on the proper head, it's much easier to take that along with your bass to try out as many cabs and cab configurations to fit your current requirements. That's the beauty of the separage head/cab setup- you can easily & fiscally upgrade your rig. :)

As for cabs, from what I've heard, the newer 8x10" Ampegs are NOT the same quality all the way around as the vintage ones. Either way, there are certainly better options around these days. Like others have said- this isn't the 70's anymore. In keeping with the classics, or cabs with a heritage, I would start by looking at SWR's Goliath series cabs with 10" drivers. As I've said before, try a 2x10" or a 4x10" cab and match that up with a 1x15. Also, as I've said, you can't go wrong with Genz Benz's neo series cabs with the 12" drivers if size, weight and overall convenience is concerned.

With his budget, you could easily get a GK 800RB or MarkBass LittleMarkII head to pair with a GB 2x12" cab(add a 2nd 2x12" down the road ;) ). OR one of those heads with an SWR Goliath cab(add matching 1x15" down the road :rawk: ).

IINM, the GB2x12s are available 4 ohms only so he would not be able to use 2 of them with either the GK or Markbass as both those heads are only stable down to 4 ohms.

I think that if your son tried that 800rb (or any GK RB-series amp, for that matter), through a pair of SWR Goliath III 4x10's, he'd absolutely fall in love with how gnarly and punchy his sound would be, especially with that Jazz bass. He would cut through the mix without having to be obscenely loud, and his band would sound better overall as a result.

He wouldn't have as much scene cred as he would with the Ampeg rig, but I think he'd like his sound better in the mix...

Look man I'll admit that I'm kinda in the same area of music that he'll be playing in, and I've got a few weird looks from people when I've gotten on stage with my Genz rig, because practically no one over here has heard of them. The looks disappear when I start to play, and by the end everyone wants a go. I think I converted a guy at our gig last night from Ampeg to Genz cos I let him run through my amp and he was amazed at how much he cut through.

I took a hell of a lot of time and asked a hell of a lot of questions on here and in shops before I bought my rig, and although I'm now looking for a different cab, I couldn't be happier with my gear.

Just tell him to shop smart

The Peavey Megabass is 200w per channel, with an internal crossover. Plus, the 200w it puts out is a VERY VERY LOUD 200w. Think GK type loudness per watt.

I played one side of a Peavey Megabass into an SWR triad and almost drove myself out of the garage with the volume at 12 o'clock.

One of those combined with a couple of Triads would mulch people and sound amazing I'm sure.

Plus it has built in high frequency chorus :)

I wouldn't recommend it for a high dollar rig but it's the best budget head out there for 200 bucks imho.
