I once had many basses and stuff, then went through a hard time, now Im on the upswing and just may be getting a new bass for Christmas...depends how nice I am to my lady.... (kidding) I agree that 6-string basses are great, and fingers only playing rocks too! but you can go rid-ic-ulous with the string count thing...witness the 14 string zither monstrosities at Conklin etc... the fact that you never play chords shouldn't mean you aspire to be an autoharp or whatever i.e. no bends or polyphonics, all single note lines, which is what too many multi-string bassists do...
