I just picked up a new J-bass and was putting new strings on. DR lo-rider's. I never had a Fender before. Now as I was putting on the new stings I noticed that the lower stings didn't fit in the small grooves of the bridge. Then I looked at the strings that I had taken off and saw that were they contacted the bridge they were not wound. I still put them on. I had to lower my action on the B and E strings because theu stuck up so hi. It seems stable. I dig the DR's and don't want to use anything else, but I've never had this issue.

I've used strings that were taperwound at the bridge and even some brands that were exposed core. I've never noticed any improvement in tone or intonation compared to regular strings. I honestly don't think it makes much of a difference one way or the other.
