Members davis1
is the slap done in which the thumb is parallel to the frets? Or parallel to the strings? What is the difference?
Members Death Hands
If you mute properly, no tonal or sound difference. Do what's comfortable.
Members DevilRaysFan
No difference in tone if either technique is executed correctly, however, keeping the thumb parallel with the strings usually keeps the popping fingers in a tighter proximity, therefore a more efficient system............. Members Jateca
Does depend on the shape and size of your hand and how high you wear the bass. Flea slings it low, so seems to have his thumb parallel to the pickups most of the time. Works for him. Just let your hand fall into whatever position feels natural, don't try and force it into one position or do anything that feels like your straining it. If you feel like you should change your hand position, then change the length of your strap first.

Members JeffBass
I actually play it with a pick. I get the attack without the noise. I know the finger guys are letting out a big "sigh" but the sound I get is distinct, punchy and clear sound without all the racket. I can't slap very well, hence the racket.
