Are Rancid & Social Distortion considered punk?

To me, part of the punk package is the nihilistic {censored} this {censored} that attitude so I guess to me Social D and a bunch of other punk image bands, aren't punk.

I don't know, have you read the lyrics to Ball and Chain and Story of My Life?

2 of my favorite bands, and I never put too much thought into it before. I think yes...but what do you think?

Matt Freeman is an awesome bass player!
:thu:

Rancid is punk. Social D was punk, but now is just more of an icon.
I'm a huge fan of both, and have been since the '80's. Every guitar/bass I own has some sort of Social D sticker on it... it's kinda like my tradition. I could go on and on about them...

My song "Your Sister's Mustache" (on my band's myspace) was inspired by SD's "Moral Threat"... which goes back to when they were punk.

Both great punk bands in their own right, no matter what anyone ever says.

Funny thing, no one here, not even the hard core fans such as you and I are arguing the bold point above, yet it's still bouncing back and forth.

I'm going to have to go give that song of yours a listen. I'm liking the idea of it already. :thu:

Hearafter, what do you think about my arguement?

Which one?

Heh, it's valid. I honestly think SD's new stuff (Anything after Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell) is great music, but definitely not "punk rock". There's punk undertones, but it's not the generic image of what punk is. The whole Wikipedia thing is pretty true... if your idea of punk is what Wiki says, then you'll never actually know what punk is.

Renfield sez: "Funny thing, no one here, not even the hard core fans such as you and I are arguing the bold point above, yet it's still bouncing back and forth." I didn't read the previous 3 pages of arguments before I made my statement, so I'm sure I regurgitated some info. Obviously people agree that SD was, at least, a decent punk band. We cover 1945, as well.:thu:

You guys want to talk to hardcore punkers, go to azpunk.com there's some seriously hard-core punk rockers on that site. They'll school your ass on everything punk, and not in a nice way... which is punk.

Agreed. I don't worry about labels too much, but I was remembering a conversation I had in high school with some kid...and he was asking me if Green Day was punk...in which I replied...maybe their old stuff like 39 Smooth & Kerplunk...but otherwise no. It got me thinking...thats all

GD is more like "emo rock"...

I have a Social D tattoo on my arm. Love the band, and that is a great album, one of their best yet.

They were punk at one point, I think they matured more into just rock and roll. And if you ask Mike Ness about it, which I have.... he will say "It's only Rock and Roll baby. That's as simple as it gets."

+1000! Mike is the man! They (SD) are like a way of life for me, for lack of a better term (old cars/hotrods, punk/rocknroll, etc). Mike is an inspiration of sorts.

Why do I suspect that if I lived in Seattle again/still, we'd hit it off pretty good as friends. I feel the same. I went on a roadtrip in the summer down to Detroit just to see Social D because they didn't hit Canada on the tour. Made a pit stop on the way home through Cleveland just to see the Clash Exhibit at the Rock Hall Of Fame. Seeing Paul Simonen's P bass from London Calling moved me to tears.

I think punk is what you make of it, Social Distortion doesn't sound very punk to me
:idk:
more sort of soft rock, with punky bass lines?

Saying that I listen to allot of hardcore like Bad Brains and Teen Idles, so I tend to think of punk in that vein which is fast, unrefined and nasty.

I think maybe the stuff you might've heard (self-titled lp & somewhere between heaven & hell) were sortof referred to as "bar rock" by alot of people I knew; simple but catchy/hooky; just your straight up rock & roll, dontchaknow. They couldn't go on screamin' "mommy's little monster" forever! LOL

I've wanted an old white Fender P bass w/ a black pickguard for years. The Clash is one of my fav bands, one of the many reasons that Rancid & S.D. are some of my fav bands. We probably would hit it off! I hope you like to drink beer! LOL Matt

The Ramones & Sid Vicious (in a way) also made me want a white P bas as well. Sid was a {censored}-up, but he looked good with that bass! Haha, Do you think the three of them got together & all bought the same color bass? The bands are all form the same era & I'm sure played together, etc. That has just always been my fav color combo for a P bass...

Of course I drink beer. Please.

I managed to get one photo of me beside the bass, but cameras are forbidden, so I couldn't get a close up. I'd love to recreate that as a functional bass, all stickers, paint and everything, just no breaks of course. It was yellow it was so used.

Here's the proof, because I know someone will make the obligatory comment.

Yeah I get what your saying, I called it hard rock with a punky bass line but I think you are more accurate.

They are good to listen to if only just to reference them in future conversation, I like them... but I certainly don't love 'em!
