As far as 80s-active bands and artists went ....

The Who, U2, The Police, Level 42, Joe Satriani, Living Colour, Pat Metheny, Jah Wobble, PIL, Steve Vai, Jaco Pastorius, Miles, Bireli Lagrene, REM, The Clash ....

Plus a steady diet of blues and jazz on the stereo and in bars live and up close.

Speaking as a true geezer, in the 80's I was still listening to 60's and 70's music.

Zepplin

Deep Purple

Uriah Heap

Bad Co.

Cream

Journey

Genesis

Kansas

Yes

Me too! I didn't listen to much of the '80's stuff as I felt it had 'no soul'. I often wondered, "poor kids I wonder how they're gonna turn out?" Well, I guess I was wrong and they turned out OK. Now I go back and listen to the good stuff I missed out on (cause I turned to country in the '80's).

I listened to WNEW and K-Rock out of NYC for most of the 80s. Touched on some Jazz and the Motown / Soul stuff of my folks.

Quit the hard rock / metal scene as the "Hair Band" stuff started to take over. Went Alt Rock and Contemporary Adult at that point. I was Grunge in the mid 80s... Flannels and boots was a way of life... so that felt right when it hit the scene.

The first singles, LPS and tapes I bought would have been around mid 80s and were:
Duran Duran
Prince
ACDC
KISS
Iron Maiden
Michael Jackson
Queen

I was pretty young and lived in the country so had no idea of genres and what not....later on people told me I was a weirdo

by the end of the 80s I loved Metallica and GnR LOVED them...that is also when I started listening to Zappa regularly

it wasn't until the early 90s that I heard the 80s music I now like the best like the Minutemen.
