Members FebruaryStars
I'm looking for a j style bridge pickup that has a lot of low end and a more pronounced midrange than usual. I don't require a lot of highs my amp/cab and string selection brings it out just fine. I just don't want that traditional Jazz sound from the bridge pickup. I need more body. It would also be good to be hum canceling, it's for a single pickup bass after all. I was looking into the Dimarzio Model J because they list it's tone as T-4/M-5/B-6. I normally don't like Dimarzio pickups but I'm not normally looking a J bass pickups either... Anyone have any ideas?Price is not that important. Members catsandstrats
I think a good choice would be the Bartolini if you were going active....Passive, I think they all sound like a Jazz. Maybe you could get something overwound.
Members FebruaryStars
Duncan SJB-3 The Quarter-Pounder has very little mid and a lot of treb... not what I'm looking for oh yeah I forgot to mention... it will be active. I'm running it through a G&L preamp. Not tone controls just volume and a clean boost circuit after the G&L.
Members Phantasm
It sounds like you're describing the Nordstrand NJ4SE pickup.
Members Incubitabus
swap it for an MM pickup. Sure it requires routing, but it'll give you the tone you're looking for. J/MM basses are fairly common, so go track one down and try it out to make sure you like the combination.
Members FebruaryStars
I was looking at the Norstrand NJ4SE but the reviews paint it as a slightly more powerful classic jazz tone. That kinda made me think it's not all Norstrand says it is. Anyone have first hand exp? Routing is not an option but yes that is the direction of tone I'm looking to head. I want it to be able to compete with my MM Sterling but not be the Sterling...
