Members Jim-Bass
I only have and play 4 string basses. With 5 strings basses, I thought the extra string was a low B, but I had a new student come in yesterday and he had a 5 string Cort but strung with the usual E,A,D and G and the extra string was on the top - tuned to C. Is that common? Are 5 string basses made to work either way? Because I've never even inquired about a 5 string bass, I don't know ....I want to make sure he's not putting undue stress on the neck
Members knuckle_head
Tuning to E will put more tension on the neck than if it were tuned to B, but the neck had best be able to handle it - it's a difference of about 10 pounds of tension. It's not all that uncommon.
Members Mytola
My 5-banger will be tuned E-C. I prefer it that way, as I don't need the lower range. I'm going to put a hipshot detuner on the E when I can afford it as well.
Members seraphim7s
It's not uncommon for 5ers to be tuned EADGC. And no, it shouldn't unduly stress the neck unless he's put insanely heavy strings on or bowed the neck already.
Moderators Kindness Posted January 20, 2008 Moderators Share Posted January 20, 2008 I have two basses tuned BEADG and one tuned EADGC. I'm looking forward to having an EADGCF or BEADGCF.

Members mlwarriner
my 5'er is tuned CGCFA (my band plays in drop-c) because i really don't need anything below the low c. unless and until i go quake, then i'll just tune it an octave deeper... Members Funkee1
The 5 stringer tuned BEADG is more popular, but EADGC isn't unusual.
