Members hair of the dog
Wuzup...My bass dude got a Maya Jazz Bass copy. It's Made in Japan, sounds very decent, although the frets are all {censored}ed up. The wood seems OK, it's no ply... Does anyone have or has anyone had any of these bass guitars ? Are they worth putting some better hardware in them ? I'll upload some pictures as soon as I get my camera.
Members Cpt. Spliff
I have a Maya. Not a J-copy, but beautifully crafted. Personally I think my ex lacks a bit of bottom and I'm still waiting for some Roto-Sound strings I was recommended by Jannda, one of the forumites (or a set of DRs, recommended by GuitarGod-something). Apart from that, it's a very nice instrument. They were made in Kobe, but the plant is defunct now. Rumour has it that it was the Kobe earthquake that put an end to it. If it's a refret- job you are planning go ahead if you are otherwise satisfied with it.

Members Fran da Man
I don't see anything wrong with the frets, not even string wear. Can you get a pic from headstock sighted down the neck?

Members hair of the dog
{censored}...we just returned the guitar :/ Can't make any more photos. The frets are really {censored}ed up... Especially the last 2 strings. When you play they make lots of noise...
Members Fran da Man
It looks to me as though it may be the neck.New strings, flatten the board, raise the bridge saddles and that thing looks playable.
Members hair of the dog
You mean adjust the trussrod ??
Members Fran da Man
You mean adjust the trussrod ?? Yes, from this pic it looks like it could go flatter.http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o9/getautmadafaka/PC180126.jpg after that second mark on the edge of the neck, looks like it drastically goes up (towards the strings)...could be the pic though. Could you tell me what kind of wood this is ? How old could this guitar be ???

Members hair of the dog
Yeah I've read the article on HC... Maya's seem really rare.... So you also think we should depend on our opinion ? It sucks coz we can't compare it to a Fender neither a Squier....
Members Thumper
IIRC, Maya basses were made by Ibanez in the '70s and '80s. Many were near carbon-copies of Fender and Gibson designs. The Lawsuit models are really nice basses---some are better quality than Fenders of the same era.
Members thelurker
Try to get ahold of Daion82. I believe he has interest in Japanese basses.
Members hair of the dog
Thumper - what do you mean by "near carbon-copies" ?
Members Tattoo Drums
i use to have one, the finish was sanded off, and had the original pickups. I liked the sound it had, definetly not fender sound to the T, but it sounded good. I used it in a punk band. Loved it till the trussrod broke, then I put dif. neck on it and sold it. Members hair of the dog
What amp do you play ? My bass player has a Warwick ProFet 3.1 or something wth a 1x15" Peavey Sheffield speaker. I think this bass has lots of highs. We like low bass tones, but without going muddy. So i guess this would be a good compromise ?
Members guitargod0dmw
If you guys like low bass tones, you should be looking at P basses...not J's. What Thumper meant by "near carbon copies" is that Maya (or Ibanez) copied the designs from Fender...very very closely.
Members hair of the dog
How about a J with single bridge and P neck pickups ? Reggie Hamilton Jazz bass
Members guitargod0dmw
I really think you guys need to head to the store and just try out a bunch of stuff. We can recommend stuff all day, but it may or may not work for you.

On the peghead of my Maya Artist-look-a-like it says; Maya Musical Instrument Co., Kobe, Japan. Were they Ibanez or maybe a subsidiary ? Wish I knew how to send pictures. You can't grab a Fender Jazz or PJ and play it unless you have the $$$ in your wallet.

You can't grab a Fender Jazz or PJ and play it unless you have the $$$ in your wallet. Is that across the board at all shops, or just a few in your area? I would say to head to a better shop. There are a few here like that...they get no business. Well...in that case, when you get the money to buy something, head to the store and try out everything in that price range. From what you've described so far, a P or P/J bass would most likely suit you guys best...but only your ears will tell you that.
