Members Thumper
A DI converts a line or instrument level unbalanced signal to a low impedance mic level balanced signal. Some DIs such as Samsamp BDDI have some tone shaping features, so you can dial in a more precise tone.

It can be done but probably not the best alternative, as thumper said the DI is a much better alternative and a good one can be had fairly resonably. Members Thumper
http://www.sweetwater.com/c957--Direct_Boxes Sweetwater is a great company. I don't think they ship to the UK, though. Check some of the brands they carry to get a feel for prices and features. I use a Radial JDI passive DI. It's not cheap, but it is reliable and is pretty transparent sound-wise. Members Bluescout
Just head to musiciansfriend.com and look up SansAmp Bass Driver. I've found that going sraight to the PA my bass doesn't have the gain to get enough volume.
Members birdboy7007
If there is a half-competent sound guy running the sound at your show, he should have a passable DI for running you into the board, if all else fails.

Members Thumper
With active electronics, you should be able to use a passive DI. I'm not sure what the UK shops carry, so I'd suggest going online to find your best price. Samson, Radial and Countryman are all highly regarded brands. Members Mytola
How do you practice? At home I use headphones with my EBS Microbass. At band rehearsals, we rent a practice space fully equipped with PA, drums, 2x guitard amps and 1x bass amp (for $100/YEAR), so I have more than enough power there as well. Members someotherguy
Just make sure the venue has a DI (also called a direct box). If it is a temp solution, you can get one for 30-50 dollars that's alright. I like a combination. Using a DI to go to the board and a smaller amp for stage volume. If this question is directed to my post, no. My amp is probably 20 years old.
