Members poomwah
for those who have heavily modded their sx basses, has anyone stripped the finish off of one? Is the nice pretty woodgrain on top real? or is it one of those jobs where they laminate in a photo of a piece of wood. It seems odd that for the price that it would be reall wood. I'd hate to start stripping the clear coat off only to watch the picture come off with it :[

Members guitargod0dmw
I'm sure it's real wood. Not from experience, but that just doesn't make any sense. Let alone the increased cost of printing pictures of wood, then buying glue, and a machine to do all of it. Actually...that really just sounds ridiculous to me. Members birdboy7007
Its called photo flame (or photoflame, or fotoflame, etc), and yes I believe most SX basses with figured tops are photo flame.

Its wayyyyy cheaper to do than buying and using figured wood. Even if it was just a laminate figured top, it'd be more expensive and harder to work with than the film. I've got basses with great wood grain that aren't laminated at all. I am a carpenter by trade...
Members factoressa
I've routed for additional pickups in my black '62P/J. It is solid wood. No laminate. I can't speak for sunburst but I would assume if black is solid, the sunburst would be as well.
Members poomwah
so much for my idea of getting one, stripping the finish, and dyeing the wood :[this would have looked so awesome in a transparent purple burst http://www.rondomusic.com/sjb62qmdredsb.html didnt notice this before, but after reading the description again, it even says "filmed" :[
Members bholder
There's a "fake bubinga" finish used on some Rondo basses as well (thinking of the Brice 8 stringers). For the price ranges they're at, I have no problem with it. But I wouldn't pay the extra $$ for it for the models where there's a choice.

Members Fiery Furnace
I stripped the finish off the head of my SX, and it looks pretty good underneath. Not amazing, but it's not plywood.

I've got basses with great wood grain that aren't laminated at all. I am a carpenter by trade... There are a lot of instruments with gorgeous grain out there, which just can't be beat. My Czech Spector has a beautiful quilt, and the finish just 'pops' it wonderfully.
