I've been there.

Here is what helped me:

1. Chiropractor. Yes it does work wonders in many cases.

2. Pilates and Yoga classes. My back was much stronger than by abs, so the back muscles did most of the work. Having a balance between back and abs strength helps reduce back pain.

3. Stretching. Especially things that elongate the spine. Hanging, chin ups, pull ups, etc.

Hope this helps.

Yeup. Had my neck rebuilt twice, March of 1995 and January of 2006. Was feeling great this last year until the head-on collission, then it's back to all this crap again.

At times, have had significant pain right at the brainstem, the type that's direct to the spinal column, brain stem, and nervous system. Physically induces a level of depression, dispair, and anxiety that I cannot possibly overcome on my own. Trigger point injections, physical therapy, chiropracty, massage, pain and inflamation drugs only partially address this. And not well enough for relief.

Late '06, after a snafu in healing and rehab after the operation, they tried me on Paxyl, and a few weeks of that really relieved me of the anxiety, and I quit taking it. This last month, re-induced from the head-on, and having hit a plateau where nothing was getting beyond this, they tried me on Cymbalta, a relative of Paxyl, for same reason, with similar results. It's helped! Even though primarily advertised for treatment of depression, both Paxyl and Cymbalta are often prescribed as treatment for neuropathy, according to my neurologist.

Sure does. Yes, I have a similar condition, and have for the past seven or eight years. Every once in a while it flares up. Last Saturday, I had to leave work, and I don't feel all that much better today. Wish I had an answer for you.

I do too. Mine is getting better now that I'm really stretching and working out again.

I went to a chiropractor a few times and decided they weren't for me. I don't believe in their methods and think they can easily do more harm than good. I started going to an orthopedic doctor and got properly diagnosed...then went to their physical therapy for a little while. It helped a lot.

I don't post often but I had to for this topic. I too suffer from chronic back pain. I've been dealing with it since 2002. My former band and I were in a horrible van wreck brought on by an 18 wheeler, while we were on tour. I will spare all of the gore, as the accident resulted in helicopters taking us away from the scene to local hospitals. We were messed up to say the least.

It basically ended the bands career and after several surgeries to various body parts, left me with 2 herniated discs in the neck. 2 in the mid back. And almost complete rupture of L5S1, which if you know about the spine is not a good one to have ruptured. I basically have no cartilage left and it is a constant cause of pain.

I've been visiting with a chiropractor for over 5 years. and I have acupuncture, electronic stimulation, hot/cold therapy, and massage therapy admininstered regularly.

One bit of advice that I can give to you is in addition to your therapy, you must work your core muscles. I suggest ( if you can afford it ) trying out pilates with an instructor. It is something that my wife turned me onto , and it really has made a difference. Not only has it built up my abs and back muscles but it has also helped with breathing technics.

It definitely got me off of the drugs I was pumping myself with to deal with the pain and the depression. Sometimes the depression was worse then the pain and it can really start to mess with your mind.

I wish you the best of luck with this from one player to another. By the way you really are a fantastic player. I've heard some of your music and caught a few vids here and there of you playing. It's truly inspiring.

all the best,

Mike

probalby not in your league but I do have a pretty constant pain between the shoulder blades and often on the outside of both shoulders...

mine is apparently due mostly to computer use and is pretty managable with stretching and strengthening exercises...but no matter what I do, it never disappears....

periodically it get's kind of out of hand and I get a couple treatments at the chiropractor.

sorry about your pain, D....have you investigated accupuncture...? Just a thought...

1 - A chiropractor that specializes in A.R.T. (active release technique) is key. Those guys are amazing. I had, what I thought was a chronic shoulder issue completely fixed, by an A.R.T. specialist.

2 - agreed, but again, you have to find one of the rare yoga teachers that is any good. 9 out of 10 waste your time and money.

Working out really helps. I brok my back in a motocycle crash back in the lat 80's and every day it hurts. It's nothing I can't deal with, mostly because I have a very high pain tolerance and I'm really used to it after about 20 years.

Strengthening the muscles to give better support really does wonders. Also look into ta TENS machine. It's a muscle stimulator.

Yup! Ruptured disc (from hauling my cabs to gigs) about 5 years ago. Horrible sciatic pain (the personality bending kind) in my right calf for about 6 months. I underwent micro disc surgery and left the hospital pain free a few hours later and never looked back (pun intended).

I had to re-learn how to lift stuff and I never haul my cabs by myself anymore. I

Stretching and exercise are the best ways to fight it - I've been there. I've had two lumbar laminectomies (L5 in '87 & L4 in '01 ) and, knock on wood, things have been OK for the last 6 years. I'll still have a bad day from time to time, but overall I'm doing OK.

If all else fails, Denson, get an MRI and see if it's surgically correctable.

A good friend of mine was in a car accident a while back and was laid up for months with a back injury. To pass the time, he got interested in reparing and modifying tube amplifiers. My favorite guitar amp that I own is a 1970 Twin Reverb that he restored to the blackface circuit as one of his early projects.

Anyway....

For the pain... work with your doctor, physical therapy etc.

For the depression. Find something to occupy your mind.

I've been there. Then I read this book. It worked for me. I can't recommend it enough.

EDIT: I've also done chiropractic, lots of stretching (especially the hamstrings), and lots of excercise. All of those help, but learning about the mind-body connection, thru this book, has given me a level of relief I haven't felt in about 8 years. It's a quick read, too.

Exactly. I have yet to hear a non horror story about people who put their faith in witch doctors (chiropractors).

I just got an order from the orthopedist for 6 weeks of physical therapy, have had lower back pain since LAST spring, sever for the last 4 months or so, and for the last 2 I've had ridiculous sciatica pain in my left leg. This sucks, I broke my collar bone into three pieces once, they said they found me lying 30 feet from where the bike stopped, and that was NOTHING compared to this. and its constant for me too, so I feel for you. I'm glad you posted this thread and that everyone gave their experience and advice to us, hopefully that will help all of us.

There's some positive comments here in this thread.

It helped me, too.

I'm not saying it'll work for everybody, and I'm not trying to convince you, but I don't think it's constructive to try to discredit something that someone may want to try, something that's worked for many. That's all.

The New England Journal of Medicine recommends spinal manipulation for low back pain over traditional care. Also, Harvard Medical school recognizes the benefit of spinal manipulation and now have added it to their curriculum.
