Hello everyone, I have a chance to buy a used Rickenbacker 4003 (red) in what appears to be good condition, for $1000.00.

I'm arranging to go play it. As far as I can tell, that's a good price. Guitar Center here is trying to sell the same thing for $2000.

What should I look for? I've never owned one of these before.

Thanks!!!!!

neck-through

stereo outs

sharkfin inlays

(i think those are all true on a real ric)

there should be a serial number on the jackplate

fairly baseball-bat feeling neck (IMO) with very little to no taper from the body to the nut

and yeah. if it's a legit ric, in decent, even playable shape, it's worth a grand these days.

Thanks guys.

Also -- the seller is asking for cash. As I'd be a little afraid to go into a strange place with $1000 cash, I countered with an offer for a cashier's check. That's fair, right? The seller said he does not have PayPal, so what other options are there?

Gun point! :D
