Members In Absentia
In light of the "modeler" thread, I thought we could compare DIs. I use a Radial Active DI right now (forget which model). Has anyone tried any of the higher end stuff (REDDI, Demeter, Aguilar, etc.) I have heard some good things about the Avalon U5, but I hate the way it sounds on recordings. I get severe ear fatigue everytime I hear one.
Members guitargod0dmw
I have the Aguilar DB900. It's great. You can hear it on my bands myspace if you feel so inclined. All of the tracks were recorded with it... I've only ever used the SABDDI otherwise. I like the Aggie better. When I play live, I just use the DI on whatever head I bring to the gig... Sounds absolutely incredible!! I love the second song on the page.

Moderators Kindness Posted February 15, 2008 Moderators Share Posted February 15, 2008 Favorite DIs are Countryman and Radial JDI. I've had and used many other "higher end" DIs, but they either sound the same or worse to me. For example, in bypass mode the Avalon U5 sounds the same and use of the frequency curves sounds worse. With the sound you are getting out of that Aguilar, I don't blame you! They sound nice, but the EQ curves wear on my ear so bad. In bypass, it sounds almost exactly like a Countryman. Moderators Kindness Posted February 15, 2008 Moderators Share Posted February 15, 2008 I have always wanted to try a U5. I'm not buying one though... One studio I use has me through a U5 one one channel and a mic'd B-15n on another. I've always liked the results, so I bought a U5 to try out against my DIs. I can't hear any difference live or recored unless I engage the filters and then it gets a bit exaggerated. I think it is useful for those that haven't spent enough time in front of a good eq panel, but if you know what you are doing behind a desk, the filters are unneeded. Members guitargod0dmw
I'll admit the main reason I want to try it is because Geddy uses one...amongst other pieces of gear like a Palmer speaker sim.

Mike Dirnt uses one in the studio too. Me, I don't have a DI. I don't have a need for one at the moment, when I do I'll buy one.

That is the specific tone that grates my ears. I love "Vapor Trails" but I can't listen to it without getting a headache.

The tone is killer on the album, but there is something in the upper mids that gets me. I hear it on the Mudvayne stuff I've heard, too.
Members RSBro
I loved my U5 when I was using it for church into our IEM setup... Guess it was just me. I use a BBE Bmax preamp right now for my DI at church. Otherwise, a pre or post from the Mesa gives me all the thump I need.
Members Super Bass
I just checked prices and the countryman is half the price of the U5!

I love the tone from it too, but I get that tone without all the extra baggage using other DIs.
Moderators Kindness Posted February 15, 2008 Moderators Share Posted February 15, 2008 I just checked prices and the countryman is half the price of the U5! And 1/5 the features. Whether the extra cost is worth the extra features depends on what you are going to use it for.
