Defretting W/ blocks & binding

Has anyone done a defret on a jazz bass W/ blocks & neck binding? It's a new MIM J that a friend wants me to do for him. It looks like a Geddy but it isn't one. It must be one of the new 70's style J's they came out with. I've only seen it once so I'm not sure exactly.

I've done a couple of defrets, but none had blocks or binding. I was wondering what will happen to the inlays if I need to level the board. Worst case: scratched/foggy appearance. Can they be buffed back to shiny? Will I even need to if I'm using tung oil?

TIA

Or worse... some of the bound & blocked Fenders, like the Geddy, are PAINTED on blocks.
