I guess invading Georgia wasn't enough for the Bear.

Now Russia is threatening Poland with Nuclear attack if they deploy the Patriot missile defense system.

Of course the EU will continue to do nothing because they are utterly dependent on Russian gas and oil.

This boys and girls is why the West needs large militarys and state of the art weapons systems.

Why can't Russia ever seem to purge itself of asshole leaders like Putin?

The man has become the government and the so-called democratic reforms mean nothing when one guy can usurp all the power.

Is that part of the world just doomed to despotic rule for all eternity?

It will get even worse when we do the same thing for the Ukraine.

Admitting them to NATO will prompt more hostility by the Russians.

Based on their history, I would have to say yes. It has always been that way in Russia. With the exception of a couple of years here and there (Gorbachev as an example) 99.9% of their history is one of despotic control, conflict with their neighbors, and the populace getting screwed.

The names and faces change, but the song remains the same.

{censored} that, Russia won't launch. Even if for no other reason than the fact that their nuke sub fleet can't stop bailing water long enough to man the launch keys, while we know the location and capabilities of every sub they own and follow them constantly with an H-K...as soon as the doors open, they'll get a Mk46 mod5 up the pooper.

This should have been seen coming as soon as Putin was elected. As for all the saber rattling they're doing, call their bluff. They aren't going to start WWIII over some patriot missiles going into Poland. With the oil exports the Russians are raking in the money at this point and can rebuild the military. Patriot missiles don't stop 1,000 Russian tanks. Eventually Paris will have to be defended . . . .er, um . . . . .

Well, the Russian government has shown its true colors. Putin is a dictator and a thug, and by rights should be spending the rest of his life in a prison cell. They were waiting to pounce on Georgia, and they seized the opportunity when it came up. Georgia's hands aren't clean in the situation either, but Russia has really drawn the line in the sand with this one.

More troubles to follow, I'm sure.

See, this is what I don't get, what I was talking about in the other thread. How can Russia be dictatorial and thuggish in it's invasion of Georgia, and America noble, or at least blameless, in it's invasion of Iraq? I just can't reconcile myself w/ that level of cognitive dissonance. What's the difference? I mean, from my perspective, there is not much of a difference. But to anyone else, what's that about for you, from your point of view?

Interesting question....I may have some insight, as I spent 2 years working with several Russian's.

Their take was that after the economic disaster's of Gorbachev's reign, that many citizens including their own relatives were calling for a return to Stalinism.

According to them, many Russian's seem to have been indoctrinated towards strong, father-figure types of leaders which can "save them" from the Checneyan rebels and provide a better economy and living conditions.

Of course these "Expatriates" saw Putin for what he really is, but many of them cannot even convince their own parents that he is truly a despot.

Did the Georgian government kill atleast 600,000 of it's own citizens? Wholesale gas the Kurds? Defy UN sanctions after losing the first Gulf war for 9 years? Pay people's families to suicide bomb Isreal? Have offspring that ran torture chambers? If you don't see the difference, you just don't want to.
