Members Optimus Prime
I need to take the fretboard off a guitar neck. I think it has something to do with heating up the glue. Was it Guitargod that got the fretboard off a Warwick with an iron? How do I reattach it, any certain kind of glue? Elmers wood glue?

Members Guttermouth
Cool. Thanks. Low heat? yeah, low-ish you wanna just try to warm up where the glue is a bit. it's still gonna be a total pain in the ass but if you can get some moist heat in the glue it should make it come up easier. Members bholder
I thought you needed to steam them off Yeah, just don't burn the crap out of it while steaming, like someone here did a few years back.
Members ezstep
IIRC, and you should check it out beforehand, a standard hair dryer is not heavy enough and you should use an electric paint remover (industrial hair dryer). But, even then, you have to be very careful to not heat it up too much, because they will get hot enough to scorch. Slooooowww and easy. Very slow and very easy. Members g.ghost
Let's see, you want to attach a WOOD neck to a WOOD fretboard . I think you should think about using WOOD glue.

Actually, no, we're looking to the detach part here. I think he already knows how to put it back together.
Members poomwah
I steamed two off so far... no rag. just put the iron on steam and let it sit on the fretboard (I had it on the frets, if no frets an rag would probably be a good idea) let it sit until it runs out of steam, then SLOWLY work on JUST that area where the iron was.... then move up the neck a little and reheat, etc etc etc. TAKE your time, its REALLY easy to crack one
Members Optimus Prime
Alright, I spent 45 minutes trying to get it off with a heat gun. That got my about 2 inches up. Then today I boiled some water in a pan with a lid over it, then opened the valve to release all the steam. I stood with the neck over a constant cloud of steam trying to pry it up for another 45 minutes and got nowhere. I was hoping it would pop right up. Members eric.chambers
I've seen guys use cappucino machines to do neck resets on acoustic guitars. Same idea here. They just connect a little hose to the steam thingy. Maybe that'll help?

Members Crescent Seven
Just take a PVC tube, put the neck inside it, attach some dryer duct hose to it, and attach that to a pan of boiling water. Leave it unattended for an indefinite period of time. Does anyone remember who did that back in the day? C7

A friend told me he'd pay me to add LEDs to the fretboard. Finally getting around to it. Neither of us really care if it works or if I annihilate the neck in the process. Members Crescent Seven
Seriously? No. The guy that did that caught his kitchen on fire, along with the neck. I think it would probably work, but the dude went and took bong hits or something and left it unattended for too long...the only thing I don't like about it is that it exposes the entire neck to all of that moisture, so unless it has a thick poly coat, it's going to warp as it dries. Members Optimus Prime
I spent another 45 minutes on it today with some weird woodburning tool. It was like a soldering iron with a razor blade tip that got incredibly hot. Sort of works. Not big enough to get all the way through. But I separated a few inches up each side.
