Members korre07
ok so i hope i don't get flammed for this, i have everywhere i've asked. can someone give me a link with information on what a bass drop/bass boom is. i hear it alot on a day to remember songs... it's just this giant bass explosion that sounds like bass hitting in a hip hop song. i hope someone knows what im talking about, im a horrible explainer. I'm a drummer by nature and was told that this is made by the bass guitar, and our bassist doesn't know how to do it either(former guitar player).... so what better place to ask than on the bass forum. is it done with a pedal, just hitting the top string super super hard, or is it not even done by the bass... PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

Members fretless
you don't want to drop your bass , that sucks , my guess than this is a technique used by lug .
Members bassgirl9
How about a soundclip? There must be a specific song that has the sound effect you're thinking of and then I think we should be able to go from there.

Members 82Daion
If you're talking in terms of hip-hop, you're probably not going to be able to do that with an ordinary bass guitar, since the "drop" is either synthesized or created from some sort of sample. Members Guttermouth
usually they are made with a noise gate and signal generator. you use a source trigger (usually a kick drum hit running into a sidechain)to open the gate on the signal generator channel. Members Incubitabus
You mean like the heavy hit at the beginning of each phrase in this one: _gHxhFnoKvI I think it's done in the studio with either a marching band bass drum, a gigantic kick, or a timpani. Anyone else with better speakers? 2:47? If so, that's a drum. Could be physical or software depending on the recording facilities.

Members Guttermouth
how would you go about producing this for a live show... and about how much would it cost you to do.... it takes two channels on a mixer: channel 1 is your normal kick ( or whatever you want to trigger the "drop" )and channel two is your signal generator channel. set your signal generator to the pitch you want (somewhere in the 30 to 70 hz range). put a noise gate with a side chain input across the signal generator channel. run an aux send from the kick channel in to the sidegate input on the gate and set your attack and release controls on the gate to the desired time you want the signal to come through.then use the aux send volume on the kick channel to set it to an appropriate volume to make the gate open up when you hit the kick. then mix the volumes of the two channels to taste. the cost will depend on what you use for a signal generator and how much you spend on a gate. neither have to be anything special the gate just has to have a side chain input and the signal generator just has to be capable of generating a sine wave ( a keyboard with hold function will work here as well) you can also use a sampler as long as you have a trigger that will connect to whatever you want to trigger the drop. Members hi.flyer
808 kick drum, pitched super low. It actually has a tone instead of just being, like, THUD. I mean obviously there's other ways of doing it but I think that's kind of the archetypal source of this kind of sound.
