I went to an orthopedic doctor...he gave me some pain killers (vicodin) and some muscle relaxing steriods (daypro) and then sent me to physical therapy. The drugs were a short term fix so I could get to PT. The PT is what really helped me...but I guess it's different for everybody depending on what is wrong.

yeah - I'm already doing the physical therapy. It really doesn't seem to be helping - I have this issue where something feels like it catches in my back and I fall. Like a nerve shooting pain - that has actually gotten more common since I started therapy :freak:

PT didn't work for me either, it just made things worse.

That sound suspiciously like what happens to me. I have a narrowed L5-S1 disc and every once in a while it pinches a nerve and down I go.

My MD prescribed some flexorill and Arthrotec (non-steroid anti-inflammatory) for immediate symptoms and actually sent me to a chiropractor. I was really skeptical, but it worked for me. My doc said it's like anything medical, there are good and bad ones. I've been doing lots and lots of core strength exercises and stretching over the last couple of years and my back hardly ever bothers me any more.

If you have stress fractures it might be a good idea to see an orthopedic surgeon before trying anything else.

When I had my back issues, the neurosurgeon took care of my business.

DOH, that's what I meant to say.

That's who finally fixed me after 3 years of PT for a completely incorrect diagnosis. If fact, I can get you their contact info if you'd like Kate. He's one of the best in the country and he's at Lake Forest Hospital.

My back issues aren't critical enough for surgery. Physio got me up and about when I first was down and out a few years ago - I was off work about 3 months though.

I now do regular chiropractor visits (every 3 weeks or so) and just recently got orthotic insoles for my work boots - really helps a lot.

Thanks Catphish.

I've been seeing chiropractors for a long long time to no avail and over the last month or two it's been getting steadily worse. I have to move this weekend and I only have two people helping. I'm probably going to be pretty useless and I'd feel terrible if they ended up doing all the heavy lifting.

Definitely going to look into a moving compay....

chiropractors

You should hear what the neuro or ortho docs have to say about them! They think they're totally full of {censored}...and I have to tend to agree with them.

I saw a chiropractor that was going to fix my scoliosis by cracking me in the right places over a specified time period. He is supposed to be one of the best around...

There is one that is the best I've every gone to. He's 500 miles away....I went to him the last time when I was at my sister's wedding.....he asked me all the relevant questions - took a look at my back. He said he couldn't feel anything out of alignment and because Chiro wasn't helping me - he said I should go straight to a medical doctor to determine if there isn't something else going on.

It's sad that there aren't more doctors like that. Who are more concerned about the health of the patient than their billables.

There are idiots and charlatans in every field. My GP and orthopedic surgeon, both referred me to a chiropractor. It worked. Plus she's super hot..... :D

It's like anything. Some treatments work for some conditions and not for others.

I have to say, though, that out of all of it, I got the most benefit from regular, intense core strength exercises and improving my general fitness. And from stretching my hamstrings. Seriously.

PT is where I'm headed. Hope it helps, because it's sure going to hurt in the wallet.

So - when dealing with a lower back problem (stress fracture + other issues) - is there some sort of back specialist or do you go see and Orthopedic?

ie: Podiatrist for foot issues.....

Danka

Never, never.......NEVER go see an orthopaedic surgeon for a back problem. If you do, more times than not, you will be sorry.

I have worked with and for both and I would never let an OS touch my back. Knees, shoulders, ankles, hips, yes. Back....no no no.
