I saw that at MF.com a few weeks ago and dug it bigtime. It's gorgeous but I wonder if the pickup is strong enough. Please tell us how you like it after playing it.

Thanks.

The pick-up is a bit weak, think old school passive bass weak, but nothing a good amp won't help with. Has that great old motown/blues vibe to it though.....

Hot, although it would be much better with a tinted finish on the neck.

+1. I love the looks, but I'm afraid the neck is the same as the one on the Squier Vintage Modified Telebass.

I very nearly bought one of the VM Telebasses, but I had a problem with the neck. Same problem I encountered with the VM Jazz bass.

I thought both were well made, both had a great sound (the Telebass was boomy and fat as all get out and the J sounded fantastic) but I really couldn't stand the neck on either of them.

It wasn't the looks (though I didn't care for the stark white, unfinished appearance) but both just seemed mushy (for lack of a better word.)

My final thought was "Why would they make such nice basses at such a great orice but then make the necks out of balsa wood?"

Incidentally, as far as pre-'57 SC P-basses, I bought a Jay Turser JTB-401 ($115 shipped!) and while I expect the Squier has better tuners, nut and bridge, the Turser has one of the best necks I've ever put my hands around and the pup is totally hot.

Ahh, the rub.

No matter how great we want to make a VM out to be, it's still a budget bass, unfortunately.

I love the look, with the small exception of the very pale neck, and the rather HUGE exception of the Squier decal. :o That blue is nice, though.

Nothing at all wrong with that, if it's a decent budget instrument. I've seen people in pretty big bands that tour America and Europe regularly slinging Squiers and the like. The bass player from the bass/drums duo Big Business quite often rocks a Squier J bass and the great David Wm. Sims from Scratch Acid, Jesus Lizard and Rapeman plays an old stock cheapo Memphis J-bass copy almost exclusively.

Aw jeez....

I have an SX P-bass that cost me under $125 shipped.

Is it as good as an MIA Fender P-bass? Hell no.

Is the MIA Fender P-bass 10-12 times "better" an instrument than the SX? (as the Fender costs 10-12 times as much) DOUBLE hell no.

The name on a headstock is pretty meaningless these days. I've played plenty of crappy, lemon Fenders from all eras. And I've played some pretty damn nice "budget" basses.

What can I say? I'm an MIA Fender elitist. :idk:

Hey, I gotcha. Ain't nothing wrong with a good Fender. I just don't buy a lot of the "this is pricier, therefore psychologically it must be better."

Undoubtedly Fender has better hardware and components than the majority of their knock-off brands making copies.

But still, an electric bass or guitar is essentially a couple of chunks of wood with some wiring and knobs and hardware.

With CNC machines, good specs and people who seem to care about delivering inexpensive products that still possess some consistence in quality of build, you can take a sub-$200-$300 bass and make it pretty comparable for not much scratch.

I guarantee you I could make some cheap mods to my SX or Turser bass and at least approach the quality of a stock MIA Fender for half the price. There are numerous people here who've done just such a thing and would bear out this fact.

You just can't be a nelly about the name on the headstock.

:p

I do agree with you. However, the first Fenders I got were used MIA P-basses. One of them was a 95 that I got for $530, the other a 2001 that cost just over $600. They've been wonderful instruments and for those prices, I think it would be damned difficult to duplicate that build, feel, and vibe. My Jazz basses cost a bit more, but I've been happy with the results. I never saw a need to go back down the Fender food chain when I've been so happy with what I have.
