Members Last in Line
I made it into my college's jazz band on the ol' upright, and I need to get some sort of way to amplify it. I own a Shure SM57 and a Shure Beta 52, but I haven't tried using it as means to amplify my bass. Will this be fine, or should I invest in a pickup? If I need a pickup, I have no idea what to get, so suggestions will be great. I'll dish out up to $200 for a pickup.

A pickup will be preferable, especially if this is a horn-type jazz band. www.gollihurmusic.com is your best bet. Good selection and Bob will steer you in the right direction for your needs without sticking his hand in your pocket.

Members Bassius
+1... Bob's the MAN!!! I like the Bass Max or the Double Big Twin (don't forget your preamp!!!) I didn't like it... I found it too muddy for jazz. A lot of "thump", but no real string noise or dynamics. hmmm most jazz players use it....john patitucci, christian McBride, Dave Holland, Charlie Hayden, Eddie Gomez....me...the list goes on perhaps it's the player and not the bass??? maybe it's your amp just wonderin

Members Bassius
There are a number of other variables involved. Maybe just tonal preference. perhaps, however i get plenty of string noise, as i choose, and dynamic control is in the fingers.... but saying it's not good for jazz....survey says BZZZZZZZZT "not good for me" would have been a better way to say it i think.... just sayin
