Members GoudX
I'm beginning to learn bass as a second instrument (guitar primary), however the bass I am using must soon be returned to its owner... So I have to buy my own. Knowing nothing about different bass types, I was wondering what basses I should have a look at for
Members Thrashterpiece
www.rondomusic.com is a decent place to start. I dont have one yet but I do plan on getting one. Their quality is a little hit or miss from what I have read on here. Some people get great ones right out of the box and others have to do a few things to them when they get them like change out some pots and some minor fretwork. But from what Ive read on here you cant really go wrong with them for what they cost.
Members BeeTL
You will hear good things about the Squier "Vintage Modified" or "Vintage Vibe" series, and you should be able to find one used in your range.
Members GoudX
Unfortunatelt the $90 shipping to the UK ruins their value a bit... [rondamusic]
Members King Kashue
130 quid isn't a ton to work with, your best bet in that range is either on of the VM Squiers already mentioned or a used MIM Fender... Also, be on the look out for various MIJ models... This Greco, or This Aria Pro II would likely be good values... Particularly that Aria Pro II...If that was in the US, I'd probably have bought it already (only 40 minutes left)... Those are both in Japan it looks like, but keep an eye out for their siblings... Members Trauma_Luna
VM squier or maybe a Yamaha RBX170, the best you can get for that money, IMO.

Members picker13
...maybe a Yamaha RBX170, the best you can get for that money, IMO. I have and will continue to recommend Yamaha basses for beginners. They are very good quality from a serious music instrument company, they hold their value, and can hold their own musically if you want to keep it as a gigging instrument. Plus they are very reasonably priced.
Members XylemBassGuitar
The Yamaha RBX170's are really good entry-level instruments for the price. I'm not sure about the entry-level Peavey's, but my first bass was a $400 Peavey 5-string that was awesome! You should let us know what you decide on GoudX... Members Flintc
I always feel kind of sad when I read threads started by children who have put two nickels together and want "the best bass I can buy" for not enough to get a decent kazoo. There is probably a price below which a minimally playable bass cannot be acquired except by stealing it. And many of these appeals are looking for something below that price. My advice: Steal a Fender. It will look just like every bass played by everyone everywhere. If you find a serial number, file it off.
Members ::zen::
Fender MIM P bass. Used if you can find one. Spend $50 getting it setup properly, with low action etc and... You'll be happy.

No {censored}. I played the VM Squier a few weeks ago, and if I had $250 laying around, would have purchased it on the spot. Fender did it right with those basses, that's my recommendation for a beginner. With the rest of the money you could buy a small practice amp and a cable, too. Members NeonVomit
True. Also look at entry-level Washburns. Great instruments. Basically, get anything with a good brand name and it should be okay. VM Squier is a good starting point.

Members GoudX
Thanks for the advice guys, still trying to work out what type of bass is right for me... But you're right, it's not like prices are just half as much in the UK (In most cases, the numbers stay the same and the currency sign changes) Went to Denmark street today (Soho, London). The lowliest bass was a new Squier
Members Noise...
I'd go for a Squier VM. Either the Precision or the Jazz Bass. The Telebass is cool, but I can't see it being versatile enough for a beginner. On the other hand, a bit more money will get you a MIM Fender. I would avoid the normal Squiers though. The Vintage Modified series is great, the rest, pretty average.
Members Rolos
How about an Ibanez SR400QM? they go for around 300-400$, and you can probably get a good deal on ebay for one.
