Members Optimus Prime
I was talking with someone today about classes and she mentioned that I should drop out of my last two periods and do the whole OJT thing. For those of you who don't know, that's pretty much when you leave school early to go to work and get a credit for it. Seems pretty {censored}ing awesome, right? I would have to drop Building & Construction and Music Theory. And that's why this is such a big problem. I planned on doing a ton of stuff in construction this year. This is the list I have so far, build a Big Muff, build a Guv'nor, put LEDs in my friends guitar neck and build a nice pedalboard out of nice wood. That should keep me occupied for awhile because I only have 30 minutes a day to work. Music Theory is kinda boring. But I need to learn what I can. On the positive side, instead of working from 4-11 four days a week (one day is Saturday). I would work from 1-8. The other 2 days I could go home and got to sleep at 12. I would get a grade and credits to go to work early and get home early. No more 17 hour days on 2 hours of sleep. What should I do? I need to make a decision by tomorrow morning. Also, I found a cool little music store on my way to work this afternoon. Stopped in and spent about a half hour just talking to the guys. They stock a ton of Orange amps. And are the only store in Florida to carry Homebrew Electronics pedals. I got to play an Orange bass head with a 410 and 115. It looked and sounded amazing. I'm really considering covering the Ampeg cab or Ashdown combo in orange. Orange has always been my favorite color. But it might look too Halloween-y. Or I might pimpify one like this. Seriously though, I could use some help with the school problem.

My last 8 months I went a similar program as you suggest. They called it co-op training. Now, cuz they were putting 2 whole classes through our school at the same time, each class went 3 days a week, 9 hours a day, 11 months of the year. This reduced it to 3 morning a week for me, and I was working 32 hours a week! In an automotive machine shop. Sweet money! Well, it started great under the boss Ron. I always liked that guy, very congenial, helpful, not the brightest tool in the shed, but always got the job done for sure, ran the shop well, and customers loved him. But, one monday I came in, Ron was gone, John was my new boss. It went downhill from there. Badly, and fast. Psycho. Nuts. Loony. And an addict oif some sort. Always hoped that guy got knifed and died slowly. Found out, this was the common opinion of him. Look, co-op training can be a sweet deal or not. In the long run, I still walked away with more, even though I got paid squat. Some guys got paid better, but never went anywheres from it. It sounds like you've got plenty to do that's meaningful in the shop. Can the job replace the meaningfulness? If not, is the pay worth the difference? I think it was $2600. But I'm not sure. The 115 was like $600. And the 410 was like $900. Sexy as hell though. Anything that I want to build, I can build at home. We have plenty of tools. But it's just a fun "class". The job can get a car. That's more important than any pedal or glowy guitar.

A car, on the other hand, will cost at least as much, plus a sheetload every week, but has significant advantages. Your call.

As cool as they are, I'd pick an old SVT before this Orange. No thought at all. I already have a car. It's about to fall apart. Seriously. I don't drive to school anymore. I walk. Like I used to. It doesn't start half the time. As long as I pay for the car and insurance, I've been promised money to cover gas to and from school and to and from work. Also for any errands I run. I'm only responsible for gas for fun stuff. I want something that will last a while and that is kinda badass. I'm sick of driving something as lame as a purple plastic Saturn. Members Crescent Seven
I'm sick of driving something as lame as a purple plastic Saturn. It may be lame, but don't bitch. I'm sure most of us had clapped out pieces of {censored} for our first cars, at least those of us that bought our own first cars. All I can say about the school-alternative programs is, you'd better pick the program wisely, and you'd better work hard. If for whatever reason it doesn't work out, you'll be in a position where you're behind the rest of your class and wont graduate on time, or at all. That's what happened to me. As a junior, I entered a tech program through my school district, for auto mechanics. I went to school in the morning, and left at lunchtime to go to the other school. I was there until 5pm. It turned out that the student:teacher ratio was like 20:1, it was all bookwork and watching videos, and I didn't learn a {censored}ing thing about cars. When I went back to full time high school at the start of my senior year, I was technically still a junior, and there was no way to catch up, even with summer school. I went back for a 5th year, but I already had my own apartment, so I had to work, and was expelled for non-attendance. If I had just stayed in regular school, I would have walked no problem... Members Death Hands
Pass on the DCT(Diversified Co-Operative Training, which is what we call it here). People that do that tend to slack like {censored}. I say work your ass to the bone on all fronts and then reap reward. I want a {censored}ing car so bad. It's vulgar. I always find time to do at least 1 little project a month at home. I just hink if I did it everyday at school that I could accomplish more. Music Theory kinda sucks like I said, but I gotta learn what I can. I know where the notes are on the paper, where the notes are on my bass, and how each note relates to eachother time wise. But somewhere in there I fail to read music. This going to school at 7 and getting home at 11 sucks. Since Saturday I've had like 8 hours of sleep and only 1 day off of work. I'm a {censored}ing wreck. I get told I look like {censored}. I feel fine during the day but the mornings and the lsat few hours of work suck. Save up and get a car man. Sell some bass stuff, go everywhere and look for a job. I applied at everywhere I possible could since I was 14. Not one call back. Finally I landed this job at KFC after 3 years. It's pretty cool now since I'm getting to know everyone and learn more about the job.

Buy tons of books of sheet music, read and play them(in both registers). Well, try to make the sleep that you do get a decent sleep. It'll help. I have. I do. I've been doing this since I was sixteen, and I'm eighteen in a month and a days.

Members Crescent Seven
I paid for it. Day I turned 16. That's cool. I wasn't insinuating that you didn't, it's just an observation. I bought my first car myself, but after it caught fire a few times and left me stranded have a dozen times or more, my grandparents surprised me with a cheap used Tercel that I drove into the ground. If I could have that car back, in the same condition I got it in, for the same price, I'd jump all over it, it was a great ride. C7

Just because I'm afraid my car won't start in the morning. It has about a 50% chance of deciding to start on any given day. It's cheaper and actually faster. If I could sell the bass stuff in my sig and with the money I get Monday, I could probably buy something decent. But I'd rather wait another month or so and get something a little more badass and reliable.
