Never played one but they come highly recommended. You might also try out an Ibanez ATK?

i havent tried an ATK, but i have seen very good reviews about it around here, have you played it? how does it play and sound?

I've played one of the new ones and loved the way it played and sounded. Sort of like a Musicman but to me it sounded a bit more bassy. Playability was excellent, especially for a mass produced instrument. It was well balanced, but a little bit heavy. I really loved it though; almost walked out of the store with it:D

My high school had a T40.

The strings must have been 10 years old but it still had heaps of good tones.

Was really mistreated by lots of kids but always stayed solid.

It was quite heavy as you would have heard. But not too bad, I was pretty weedy as a kid but could handle it fine , so I don't think it that much of an issue

You won't find anything that will touch at T-40 in your price range unless you get lucky. The ATK is a good choice (I only know it by reputation, unfortunately), also a used G&L Tribute may pop up. Those are the three I'd focus on in your price range.
