currently looking for an amp to replace my 600 watt GK backline half stack. i have $1000. should i buy a new set up for that much or get a new head and replace the cabinet when i get a little more money? i play in a death metal band tuned to b and a rock cover band, if that helps.

I'm pretty sure the most powerful Backline half-stack is only 300w, and that's with a 4 ohm cab. Is your cab 4 ohms or 8 ohms? Maybe that's the problem, you may just want another cab or replace you current cab.

If it is a 4 ohm cab and the power is insufficient, I suggest getting a GK 700rbII with a 4 ohm Avatar or Dr. Bass cab, depending on your budget constraints. Both are very good, the Dr. Bass being a bit more expensive and powerful.

If you can find a good deal on a GK 1001rbII, get it along with the cab(s). With the 1001rbII you can get an 8 ohm cab now and another later for a killer stack.

$1K is pretty tight to replace a stack. Not a big fan of the Backline stuff, myself. Maximum bang for buck, IMO, is going to be a GK1001RB head atop an Avatar 2x12 cab. I'd save up(play a few more jobs), take your time, and try out a bunch of stuff before throwing $$ away on maybes.

I just looked up the GK Backline half-stack at MF.com and sure enough the 410 cab that comes with it is 8 ohms, meaning he's only running at about 200 watts and not the full 300w.

My suggestion is sell the cab first and use the money to buy the new Avatar 2x12, the 4 ohm version. The Backline 600 head is a decent head, Gallien himself says it's nearly identical to the lower amp on the new 800rb's. His outa pocket would then be minimal and it should crank.

Of course he could buy an 8 ohm Avatar and stack'em, which would give him much more volume and power.
