It didn't happen today, but we had a guy shove a drill bit into his chest and collapse a lung (it was a couple inches from puncturing his heart). We also have a paint line with an overhead conveyor. One of the temp employee was jumping off of a lift and got his ribcage hooked by one of the conveyor's hangers and was dangling there by his ribcage. We also occasionally have people cut off digits, but that doesn't happen too frequently. It's a wonder OSHA hasn't shut us down.

I used to work at a cardboard box factory that would shut down the line when I got too much blood on the boxes from my papercuts. It was just accepted that there will be blood and they just had to find a way to deal with it.

I had to thread my way through a really widespread area of severe thunderstorms down around Atlanta, the remains of TS Fay. Will have to do more of that today too it looks like. Gotta give way to Mother Nature, she can be a mean beotch!

At job one: I had to manuever some very large and unstable loads with a forklift in/around/over some nice cars. The chances of damaging those cars was high enough to make the job pretty stressful. Also fun because the VP of the company was visiting (one of the cars was his).

At job two: I had to haul a brand new 9 foot grand piano through some VERY tricky/dirty/uneven territory. One slip and it would have been "but that was a priceless Steinway..........not any more!"

Lets see,

The most dangerous stuff that happens to me is:

Exposure to Alpha, Gamma and xray radiation.

Exposure to radioactive gasses under pressure.

Exposure to flammable gasses under pressure.

Exposure to open pots of hot-melted high lead solder.

Exposure to a variety of HAZMAT substances including, but not limited to:

- chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents

- aromatic hydrocarbon compounds

- aminies and amids and polysiloxanes and bis-phenols and ketones and acids and alkalines and esters and silicas and ...

While these are all dangers to me, I have not had any incident. I can not say the same about others in my facility.

People could get very very seriously injured here. And because of that, the lab takes huge measures in preventative training, awareness, safeguards, ongoing reports on safety records, more training, qualifications, lock out - tag out procedures, more training, keytree-controlled access and interlocks, crain checks, etc.

Easily, some of the things that could happen would be pretty gross. Gross neglegence of safety issues is one of the few things you can get instantly fired for around here.

Here is a scan I made last year of an injury report at the engineering firm I worked for:

Basically it says the guy was out surveying and walked over to the fenceline to pee and a something stung him on the end of his penis while peeing...
