Marcus Miller or Am. Std Jazz Bass?

Hello i am interested on buying a jazz bass.... (i have a p-j)

I am between Marcus Miller J-Bass and American Standar J. which one is better???

i tried the standar bass but i cannot find the M.M. in my town.

I'd go with the US and an outboard preamp. I hate the big honking pickguard on the MM. Plus, with the outboard pre you could use it with all your basses.

i am not a fan of the MM Jbass. never could get a good tone out of one, and they are HEAVY.

If we are only looking at these two choices, I like them both, but I like the American Standard better. Lots of people like the MM though so see if you can find one to noodle on.

 

if I was buying a Jazz though, it would probably be a Lull or a Lakland.

Both great in their own right. I really dug the MM jazz and didn't find it as heavy as it was cracked up to be. Damn cool.

 

However, i do prefer the am. standard. My word of advice would be to try a P-bass too! I have always prefered Jazz to P's, but when trying both the American Standards, the P felt really great in my hand and I actually found it easier to slap!

If it were me, I'd get the Marcus Miller. I like the way the MM plays, and I like the fact it has an ash body. I would probably replace the pickups and/or preamp.

American Standard, some SS DR strings and a Sadowsky Outboard preamp should = instant Marcus Miller tone (well, you still won't be able to play like him and get that last bit of his tone).

I don't like the fact that the Marcus Miller is abreviated MM. Music Man already has that achronym in the bass world. It's very confusing.

of all the Fender Jazz basses, the MM is the one I've liked the best.

I own both now actually- and really like both. It depends what you want. The American Standard is more traditional looking and has different hardware and pickups. The Marcus is nice but if you had to get just one, it might be worth just getting a used American Standard...
