Members solderjunkie
I wanted a lightweight, inexpensive punk-rock guitar with Joe-Strummer tone. It needed to be trashy and brash, but look almost traditional. I bought a cheap project-starter and put in my order to GFS:thu: I started with a Squier Affinity Telecaster in Butterscotch Blonde. I like the Squier body. It's alder and 1/4" thinner than the other Teles, so it's super-light. I could wear it for hours (even with my back issues) and have no discomfort. I used a lefty Eden neck (leftover from another project), flipped righty and amber tinted. I still need to put some reference dots on the topside. The tuners are lefty 14:1 from GFS and the traditional button-string-trees are super cool. It's a Tusq nut, too. I H-A-T-E the new flat Tele bridges... a Tele needs a three-saddle bridge in a tray. I bought the three-saddle from GFS. If you look at the close-up pic, it is very nice and fit/adjusted very easily. I only needed line it up and drill the mounting holes. It even came with screws and an allen wrench. I wanted super-simple electronics. I Esquire'd it, so no neck pickup. The bridge pickup is a 1969 Thinline reissue leftover from another project. I bought the control plate blank from GFS. It has one 3/8 hole for a volume pot. The wiring is simple... pickup>volume pot>jack. The 250K pot and Switchcraft jack were here in a drawer. The metal jackplate to replace the cheesy plastic one was here as well. Of course it's all shielded with copper foil and grounded well. The three layer pickguard is a GFS part. Thanks for reading this far... on to the pics. It's not quite light yet and it is cloudy, so crappy flash-pics is all I can get.

I have a wicked Strat for versatility... the Tele is a "one-trick pony". I'm trying to develop a tone that is unmistakeable, and flipping a selector switch will change that tone. I have no clip-recording capabilty at home All I have here is my wee 5-watt practice rig.

Nice job on the Tele!! And that bridge only pickup probably sounds really sweet!

Members solderjunkie
Nice job on the Tele!! And that bridge only pickup probably sounds really sweet! especially with no tone-pot or tone-cap to dilute the signal:thu: I like the volume knob... the 250K pot is super-responsive. It will "clean-up" at about 3/4 throttle, then get nasty at wide-open.

Until you go to tune it, then you will curse the day you ever thought that it would be a good idea.

Members solderjunkie
I took it to the studio last night and left it in our lead guitarists hands for a few hours. It's amazing what great tones come out when a skilled player is holding it:thu: The volume knob (the only knob;)) is super-responsive. I was amazed how well it cleans-up through a dimed tube amp. I got to hear it from across the room, and it sounded much fuller than I expected from a Tele bridge pickup. I'm a guitar-n00b:( I can only copy what others play... I am just now beginning to learn improvisation, phrasing, and riff-building.
