Members Krank
I've come upon an old Japanese bass that looks cool and solid. However, as a guitar player I'm not familiar with oak wood for a bass body. What characterises it in terms of sound and weight (I guess it's pretty heavy)? Members negge
Well yes oak is pretty heavy. And also fairly hard so i guess it should give it a pretty bright sound. But i might be totally wrong here!

Members Jazz Ad
The main issue with oak is cracks. It is a very dense and hard wood and frequently cracks with age.Otherwise it is indeed very heavy so it reacts like a lot of exotic woods. Not much character or color, lets harmonics fly out easily, bright tone.
