Headphone amplifiers

Ok, so the Live Sound & Production and Recording forums have been almost useless, so Ill try this out in here:

My band recently got a few noise complaints from our last couple of practices, and as such, we've decided to switch to a headphone monitored mix. This will allow us not only to reduce the acoustic volume of practice, but also to even out the vocals in the mix so our singer doesn't keep killing her voice just to keep up with the drums.

We have an electric drum kit, electric piano and I plan on running the bass and guitar direct (at least for the time being until this blows over) into our small 6-channel mixer. We all have decent/nice headphones (EH's and Sennheiser's), but we need a headphone preamp.

I plan on buying used from eBay or Craigslist, but my issue is that I don't know what's good. I have no intention of going cheap-{censored} and buying Behringer (too many bad experiences with their equipment in the past for me to ever go back), which leaves a number of other options. So far, I've seen used models DOD, ART, Presonus and Samson that have enough outputs (5+) for our needs, but what do you guys recommend I look for?

As long as you can provide a stereo input, it should work well.

I can always just use a splitter to duplicate a mono signal into stereo. That's how we did it in college to avoid having to use 2 channels just for a headphone mix.

Thanks for the suggestion. Me likey the price! :thu:

I currently use the Rolls HA43 Stereo Headphone Amp but it tends to start crackling after sliding the volume past about midway point. I initially thought it might be the headphones I was using but we've tried different ones and they all do the same.

Is this an issue with the headphone AMP?

Dirty sliders maybe ?

Hmm... I wouldn't think it'd be dirty sliders - the device is only about 2 weeks old and it did it from the get-go. Am I potentially sending too much signal too it from the mixer? I've tried tweaking it around but seems that only when I take the sliders down past the midway point does the noise go away. Oh, and it only happens when the drum kick hits and/or, in some instances, the bass causes it as well.

Again, my issue with Behringer is customer service-based, not quality based. They refused to cover what should have been a warranty issue after giving my old guitarist the run around regarding his practice amp. I won't buy their products on principle.

No argument from me. Several business have done me wrong in the past I refuse to use their services.

Respect.
