Members Taustin Powers
When she was announced, I thought it was a very smart pick by McCain. A picture-perfect conservative, gun-supporting, attractive family woman, to counter-balance Obama's charisma and steal the Hillary supporters. Top it off with a reputation to even go against her own party on corruption issues. Brilliant! Now I am not so sure anymore: - 17 year old unmarried pregnant daugher Yes, it's irrelevant to her qualification as VP, but whether we like it or not, it hurts the ticket big time. With Palin presenting herself so high on morals, abstinence, yadda yadda, this is an issue. - Palin's past ties to the Alaskan Independence Party - Investigation on Palin abusing her power to get her former brother-in-law fired - She had actually supported the "bridge to nowhere" project. - Husband's DUI two decades ago (Again, should be completely irrelevant, but in reality nothing is) - McCain sending dozens of people to Alaska to further investigate her background AFTER he introduced her Like I said, at first I thought she was a brilliant pick for him, but now I'm starting to get the feeling it's gonna backfire on him and actually hurt his campaign. All these revelations indicate that he may have made a rushed decision without investigating thoroughly enough, or that he picked her despite all this, which some people might call poor judgement. Also, her young age and lack of experience now makes it a lot harder to attack Obama for HIS lack of experience. Now if at all possible, I'd like to keep this thread from turning into a "Conservatives vs Liberals" fight, I think we've had enough of that in other threads, and it won't bring anything new to the table. (Hey, I can dream, right? ) No matter whose side you are on, I would just like to know if you still think she is a good choice for McCain after all. Members BassMaster General
I saw one of McCain's aides on CNN last night and I gotta say he seemed a little rattled. They seem to be in a defensive mode. And I'd like to think if they knew everything there was to know about her they would have been a little better prepared. Or they were under the delusion that the media would just ignore all that fodder....Can't we just get back to what this election is really all about? Obama is too inexperienced and McCain is too old. What else really matters?

Members Brother Mango
When do we start taking guesses on how long before Palin is dumped? For one, it's regular McCain machinations for someone to be dumped or stepping down on a semi-frequent basis. Second:http://news.yahoo.com/s/bloomberg/20080902/pl_bloomberg/azjwbcginwsg Who introduces herself to the world and feels it important to mention her spouse's racing of snow machines? Maybe during her convention speech she'll invite her husband on stage to do his impersonation of WC Fields.

Members SelenaBassGirl
well like I told my hubby last night, the fact her unwed teen daughter is knocked up, shouldn't be an issue. It doesn't make you a bad parent if your kid comes up prego. You can lecture and drag them to get on birth control, but they are still going to do what they want to do. I know b/c I come from a decent family-pretty well off, and I did everything opposite that my parents told me. You can raise a child to good morals and standards but as soon as they find one person (peer) that is not so good-that one person can influence a teen in a heartbeat. I hung around a wild crowd in high school-partying etc..(lucky I didn't get knocked up) despite what my parents did to keep me from hanging, I still managed to find a way. Now as far as the other issues...IDK..I don't follow politics much. But family life-unless it is the candidate themselves drunk-drugged,etc-and I am talking in the present or close to present, then yah, I'd say it was an issue. Hubby drinking/driving is a personal issue that hubby has (although the only contribution she may of had was annoyance or something, lol)... Members Taustin Powers
...snip... I agree that all these issues should not be relevant when evaluating her as a politician. Sadly, reality looks different, and these are all things that WILL HURT THE CAMPAIGN, the way I see it. The news media are unforgiving, and a significant portion of the general public is eating that {censored} right up.

The media will dig and dig until they can find all the skeletons in ones closet in order to not get them in the office... I disagree, respectfully. Obama voted FOR big tax credits for oil companies and McCain voted AGAINST them, but the media has forgotten that. They forget the 57 states, the "For the first time in my life...," the lost teleprompter episode where he couldn't find his ass with both hand, etc. The media CHOOSES what to forget and what not to forget. Her husband joined the Independents...she never did. Hillary's husband is an adulterer...Hillary may not be. We forgive one and not the other??? Members Taustin Powers
I honestly do not believe that they "forget" anything like that. The media will report and focus on whatever they think sells the best. Sadly, it's scandals and skeletons in the closet most of the time. But sure, some heavily biased ones will pick and choose the scandals they report on, following a political agenda.
Members t3ch
Are you serious? If all of those issues are the worst they can come up with for Palin, then I'd say she's pretty damn sparkly clean. That doesn't even touch what all the other politicians in high office have been hiding the past 8 years. What next? OH NOES, SHE LIKES ENGLISH MUFFINS AND FRENCH TOAST, SHE IS UNAMERICAN!! Let's make a big deal out of nothing oh nooooessss

The media will dig and dig until they can find all the skeletons in ones closet in order to not get them in the office... At least against conservatives. I've heard Trooper-gate a million times now. Haven't heard the term Rezko-gate or Ayers-Gate once. Actually watched a Bio that "exposed" McCain and Obama on CNN. It turned out to be a "What don't we know about McCain (queue evil music)" vs. Cheerleaders for Obama! (Ayers wasn't even mentioned in the hour piece). The media disgusts me lately. The McCain camp says these issues came up in the vetting and McCain decided they weren't relative. The media is doing the old "what did they know" suffle. In Palin defence, they were going to do this to any McCain choice. If they were established it would have been the "Why is McCain going with an insider if he's such a maverick" speel. Members citizenralph
She remains a great pick. The fact that her daughter is pregnant does nothing to change her stance on abstinence and pro life. It's still a valid stance.
Members Crescent Seven
The fact that this thread even exists is testament to the fantastic job the mainstream media is doing for the democrats. Stack up all these "transgressions" the media is reporting about Palin against the {censored} that's been dug up and vetted about Obama, including things in his own books, and there's no comparison, except that the media isn't pounding on the Bill Ayers issue, they're not talking about Jeremiah Wright anymore, they haven't talked about Rezko for even a second...it's mind boggling. Moderators ThudMaker Posted September 3, 2008 Moderators Share Posted September 3, 2008 Sounds like the OP has been reading too many AP articles. Palin has taken the earmarks per person in Alaska from $800/person when she took over in 2006 down to $295 per person. That's significant reform any way you cut it. Also, the latest AP article attempts to currently link her to Ted Stevens. That's too funny. The Kool-Aid is that way.

Nevermind that when Obama was with Wright everyone was saying "he can't lead, look at who he surrounds himself with", and yet those that McCain has chosen to surround himself with has been ignored. The fact of the matter is that if you are running for president/VP, skeletons is going to come out of the closet. I'm just not so sure that McCain knew about these skeletons. Some of Obama's came to the surface. [to the general forum, not C7 in particular]Can any of you look at the election without your party bias? I believe that many of you are just regurgitating what your respective side has to say, rather than using any abilities to reason for yourselves. If you find yourself constantly defending your side, then you are probably caught up with your party's side too much. Can any of you liberals say that you 100% agree with Obama and that the stuff that came out against him doesn't concern you? What about the conservatives? This isn't the Patriots vs. the Giants here. These people are going to be running our country. Put some effort into your thought process, and neither candidate will likely come up smelling like roses. /soapbox
