Members J-chot
in your opinion? I'm just curious... also, what would you recomend as an excellent replacement neck for a p-style bass? you know what, I just want to know what YOU think makes a p-style bass great, and what are the best parts to "splurge" on. Members Thumper
'Best' pups is pretty subjective. What type of tone are you looking for? A new bridge is definitely worth looking into. A Gotoh 201 or various models of Badass are good choices.
Members jasper383
I have tried several, major brand, P Bass aftermarket pickups. They all were very good. The only real, noticeable difference I ever noted was output. My favorite because it gets you the P sound with the best, in my opinion, value, is the Fender '62 Original. You can spend much, much more, and I'm not sure you can do better. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Fender-Original-62-P-Bass-Pickup?sku=301602&src=3WFRWXX&ZYXSEM=0&CAWELAID=26021532

Members Thumper
Allparts offers some nice Jazz necks. Check eBay. If you're looking at a new neck and pups, maybe you want to save up for a new bass.

Moderators ThudMaker Posted September 4, 2008 Moderators Share Posted September 4, 2008 1 nice real Fender vintage P will do. Also, I haven't tried one yet personally, but Kindness and I share very similar tonal tastes out of our basses. He likes Lindy Fralins. I would look into them, as well. Members neptunefix
What kind of pups are in an American Standard P-Bass? Or, what pups would sound the most like it?
Members 82Daion
I'd recommend going with something from Aero.
Moderators Kindness Posted September 15, 2008 Moderators Share Posted September 15, 2008 I'd recommend going with something from Aero. You liked that one, didn't you? I have three P basses. The Lakland has the stock Fralin, it's fantastic. The Fender '57 RI has the stock '57 P pickup, which sounds great but is lame to setup due to the raised pole pieces on the A string. The Fender P Special has the Aero. I've also installed Fender Original '62s in a few basses. All of them are great P pickups.
Members 82Daion
You liked that one, didn't you? Indeed. I would love to hear one of his P pickups wound to the same standard of "clean" that the pickups in the E-C Cruise 5'er were. I have a set of Lundgren P and J pickups (I think that they're the "hot" variety) that I plan to put into my Fender fretless-it should be interesting to see how they stack up to the other "boutique" brands.
