Any good info on old Music Mans?

If anyone has the time to toss out some info on Music Man bass guitars from the pre Ernie Ball era, that would be rad.

Is the string through body thing good, bad, or not much of a factor?

What is normally considered a decent price to pay for one?

How do you like the tone/quality of the old vs new?

Is there a particular year to buy/avoid and why?

Or if there are already 1000 other good posts on the subject, please link me to one. :thu:

String through body = older, and pre-ernie ball. Three bolt is better. (Again older) Older generally means you'll pay more, and it will be worth more. Generally, four bolt pre-ernie ball basses usually aren't string through.

The tone issue really has to do with the older pickups, and the two band EQ. The sound will really be up to you. If you believe the older ones sound better, then they do. I've owned a four bolt '83 Stingray, a newer SR5, and still own an '83 Cutlass that's a four bolt bass. I have loved all of my MusicMan basses.

This thread makes me sad thinking about the time I passed up a very early Music Man my cousin was going to sell to me very cheap as it had been in his attic for a few years. I thought it was too heavy and I was leary of the 3-bolt neck plate.

FOOL!
