Members B-Bottom
I always see guys on motorcycles doing the side wave to other guys on motorcycles. I don't get it but whatever. Any who my question is this....Do people who ride Harleys and such still do the wave thing to guys on crotch rockets?
Members cliffsdad1234
some do, some don't.
Members Kelemvor
They do. It just boils down to whether the bikers are 'weekend rider' Harley snobs who don't care about the biker lifestyle, just the image. One thing I've noticed, is that the dual sport, goldwing, scooter, and other sport bikers are much more likely to wave back if I 'initiate' the wave. Members Crescent Seven
It seems like the BMW and Hayabusa guys rank up there too. Yeah, but at least out here, you don't see as many of them. This town is rank with Harleys; on any given Saturday in July, you can see the chrome from outer space. I notice the elitist thing more than some, I guess. I drive a 15 year old Pathfinder, live in an older townhome, and still wear shirts I was wearing in college. These fashion queen status whores can kiss my ass.... C7

Love that fresh leather smell. C7 You obviously don't know the first thing about it. Since I tend to like you(don't ask me why),let me give it to you straight. The wave to other bikers is more to acknowledge you SEE them than anything. Most bikers that get creamed, get it from an idiot that didn't SEE them. I have ridden Harleys for the last 15 years, and the way Harley is catoring to the rich {censored}s,is sickening. These are people that have a five year old bike with ten thousand miles on it. You do the math. I put 30'000 miles on a bike a year. I ride. The leather is NOT a fashion statement. If some ignorant,punk-assed {censored}ing bitch pulls out in front of you and you go down, you can slide 200 feet before you start to need skin grafts provided you are wearing you boots, LEATHERS,gloves, and assorted riding gear. Your statement,C7,is made with no actual idea as to what you are talking about. It would be the same as someone saying that "You find it hilarious that most elitist bass players in the clubs are playing Fenders! Yah man,you do something NEW with that. Love that fresh smell of guitar polish." Not intending to bust your balls,or disrespect you, just trying to hopefully educate you on something you know very little about,so you don't insult someone,or look stupid again! Members gonzobassman
One more thing. In mountainous terrain, the temperature can vary 40 degrees or more. Add to that the wind chill of being in the open air at 60 - 95 mph. I think Colorado has mountains. The best protection from wind, rain, and other road hazards that I have found,is layers of leather. I put on my newest, and best looking on last so I don't look like a sleazeball when I ride through some town I will never ride through again, just out of respect for the assholes that think I'm hilarious! Members georgestrings
I wave back to anyone who waves to me, but I think the whole thing is kinda stupid - and it wouldn't break my heart if everyone quit doing it tomorrow... As a longtime Harley rider(nearly 30 years), I honestly don't care what others ride - I look at ALL motorcyclists as taking the same daily risks as I do.. I have alot more respect for a guy that rides a foreign made bike that rides on a regular basis than I do for the guy that wears all the Harley crap, and rides once in a blue moon... - georgestrings

This whole thing just makes you sound like a {censored}ing moron. The "wave" around here is certainly not an acknowledgment of being seen. It's basically a "hey...we're bikers..." type of thing, much like the Jeep wave. To answer the original question, I wave to everybody. We're all bikers regardless of the bike we ride. I'd still like to get a crotch rocket one of these days, but only to supplement my cruiser...not replace it.
CMS Author Craig Vecchione Posted September 12, 2008 CMS Author Share Posted September 12, 2008 If I were to ever buy a motorcycle I probably wouldn't get a Harley just because that's the bike to buy. It's sort of like Ampeg amps in a way. And in a reverse sort of way, that would make you just like the elitists....buying a certain bike because of what it is or stands for, not just because it might be right for you. I used to ride Jap bikes, because at that time Harley's were at their lowest. My next bike will either be a Harley or a Star because they are the most comfortable and fit what I'm looking for in a bike today.

It's sort of like Ampeg amps in a way. People with HD want you to think that HD is the bike to buy. Referring to amps, you really cannot argue against GB, G-K, TE, old SWR, etc., but Ampeg guys will argue for hours about the virtues of their amp. That's fine, but there are other amps out there that perform better...for less money. HD has made billions in their marketing. You don't see a lot of Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki, etc., clothing, but you find tons of HD hats, shirts, belts, boots, socks, handkerchiefs, watches, wallets, drinking glasses, cups, shot glasses, playing cards, clocks .... Members ZedsDead
I've had a sport bike since I was 17 (almost 20 years now) and I find very few people who won't wave. Mostly, it is the biker club harley guys. I only wave back, now-a-days... so If I pass another rider who also we pass without a wave.
CMS Author Craig Vecchione Posted September 12, 2008 CMS Author Share Posted September 12, 2008 You guys confuse and amuse. So many exclusionary and insulting comments in this thread . Why does it matter how much someone rides, or as gonzobassman wrote, that they put 10,000 miles on in 5 years??? Why does it matter if you're rich and ride a $32K CVO Ultra, or a $2K Suzie 450? How is it that having an expensive bike somehow makes you an asshole? These attitudes are {censored}ing hilarious to me. You'd think longtime riders would welcome others who want to join the ranks of bikers. That rich 'asshole' you just passed and dissed might be a state senator who's sponsoring a bill that benefits motorcyclists, or stopped to help your buddy last week when he flatted his rear tire. It's just a {censored}ing motor vehicle. If you want to make it your lifestyle, that's great. If you want to ride twice a season, that's great too. The wave is nothing more than showing respect to another rider. It's no different than saying hello to someone you don't know who's passing you on the sidewalk. Members burdizzos
I ride a BMW and I wave to all other bikers. I almost always initiate the wave and it is almost always returned. The only people who do not return the wave are Harley guys. Most HD guys are just like georgestrings in their perception of other motorcyclists, but there's an elitist group of douchebags like the folks C-7 is talking about who seem to be increasing in number. Most of the Harley elitists are middle aged yuppies who are new to motorcycling.

It goes both ways. In other words, there are dickwads in every group. Last week I was following about a dozen guys on Harleys (and one Victory), all brand spanking new in their leathers, and to a man they and their bitches all waved to passing bikers. The responses were mixed, with pretty much only half returning. It was about equal numbers of Harleys and other bikes. And this is exactly what I experienced as a boater...you'd have people in 60' yachts wave and even slow to reduce their wake when passing, and some in 15' skiffs who'd stare you down like you were {censored}ting on their front lawn. Members ezstep
Why does it matter how much someone rides, or as gonzobassman wrote, that they put 10,000 miles on in 5 years??? My local dealer, also a good friend of mine, says that most used bikes have under 12,000 miles on them, and a very large segment have around 4000. People buy 'em, trailer 'em to some location, unload and ride 'em, then trailer 'em and return home. Repeat about three or four times per year. There are plenty of bikes out there for sale, four to six years old with less than 5000 actual miles.
Members chunky-b
I have yet to get my first street legal bike, but riden dirt for years. I watch out for bikes on the road, cause I like to see who is riding what. I was riding across the spillway of our local reservoir and saw two crotch rockets get overtaken by a yuppie on a dual-purpose bike. They all waved, smiled and road on... It is simply a bikes versus cages acknowledgement. A welcome to the freedom club... And the yuppies on the HD crack me up. They want to act like they are these tough hells angels cats... It's just funny....
Members PaulyWally
Wow... OK. In response to the original post: First of all, some wave some don't. Secondly, don't confuse a wave for a hand signal - which most bikers rarely do nowadays now that we have almost zero single lane and unpaved highways anymore. But I do see it from time to time. They are intended to communicate and prevent deadly accidents on narrow roads. For example, you hold up 5 fingers to indicate there are 5 (or more) bikers behind you, 4 fingers if there are 4 bikers behind you, etc. You hold up a closed fist to indicate there are no more bikers behind you. As for all the leather... it's not just a fashion statement. Most biker leather is made for the biker. That means it's padded, it's stronger, it doesn't balloon up in high wind, and it keeps you cooler than normal leather when it's warm out. So the question is, why leather? Because bikers have walked away from 50mph accidents because they wore leather. It won't prevent bruises... and it won't prevent broken bones. But it WILL protect your skin if you are dragged on concrete for 100 feet after being thrown from your cycle. As for the "fashion" of leather. Well... you wear it to protect yourself. You might as well wear something that you think looks good. It's no different than the many styles of a winter jacket. Everyone has their own taste. I hope that clears some things up. Members guitargod0dmw
Oh...and I'll add that sometimes it's difficult to initiate or return the wave, due to grabbing the clutch to shift or something of that nature. Those are the only times I don't do it...but I replace it with a head nod. Not sure if the other rider can see that, but at least it's something.
