Members terminalnation
The solid state ones. These any good? Can they even hold a candle to a perfectly working vintage SVT?
Moderators Kindness Posted September 14, 2008 Moderators Share Posted September 14, 2008 Other than the brand name and that they are bass amps, there are no significant similarities. As to whether the current amps can hold a candle to the vintage, it depends on your criterion. Excepting the SVT-VR, Ampeg amps are professional caliber bass amps that function for their intended use. If the measuring stick is whether the new solid state Ampegs are reasonable imitations of the vintage SVTs, then the new ones come up short - but of course they would, because they aren't intended to be anything like the old amps. Members pwgjam
I agree with Kindness. I don't think the newer SS stuff is in any way intended to be an immitation of the vintage SVTs. I don't know about the vintage stuff but I've got a new (Korean, I think) 450H which is currently broken so I've been using a newish (one of the last US made models) VR.Aside from the power of the VR I think I actually prefer the tone of the 450H. Obviously it doesn't sound like a vintage SVT but to me is seems a lot more versatile than the VR. For me the 450H isn't as dry as the VR either. Which I like. Members bluedogaudio
I agree with Kindness too. A friend of mine told me to go check out this SVT-VR, which just so happened to be setup next to a SVT4-Pro. I knew the SVT-VR would sound better, but I didn't expect it to utterly destroy the SVT4-Pro. I bought the SVT-VR a few weeks later.

Members jackcheez
SVT used to mean 6 X 6550. Now they call just about anything an SVT.

Members Jugghaid
Different amps entirely. Both good in their own ways. Nothing is quite so nice as a vintage SVT though. Except maybe a vintage all tube Trace head. ;D
