Members Thunderbroom
I've realized in the last few weeks that I'm at a crossroads in my career. I'm at a point where my job just kinda flows and it's a very stable. For the first time, I'm feeling a little burned out. I feel like I'm taking the easy road. I make a great income. I'm going to school now to help facilitate the change though the orignal intent was to boost my income at my current job not actually change paths. I'm now thinking I need to get off the easy train and take some risks. Am I crazy?

Members BeeTL
Am I crazy? Depends...what kind of risks are we talking about here? If you're thinking of a job in the financial services sector with AIG or Lehman Brothers, yes, you're crazy.

I don't think many of the investment banks are hiring right now.
Moderators Kindness Posted September 18, 2008 Moderators Share Posted September 18, 2008 I'd make the change after school, but it depends on how burned out you are.
Members fingeringam
in any other economy id suggest change, but its getting too unstable to try to to shake things up, if the economy takes an up turn in a while, go for it

Members Thumper
What are your priorities? More income? More job satisfaction? Something else? I'd say take a hard look at motivates you, and take it from there. In any case, good luck in your future endeavors.

I'm now thinking I need to get off the easy train and take some risks.Am I crazy? Honestly? Yes, a little. Be thankful, very thankful you have a job you feel is stable. I was at exactly where you are a few years ago. About a month later I was laid off without notice, and I've had to struggle to find decent work. I might finally be getting back on track (2nd interview tomorrow for a pretty interesting job) but what sticks in my mind is how fast and how unexpectantly things can go from boring to unwelcome excitement. Members Thunderbroom
What are your priorities?More income?More job satisfaction?Something else? Income is not a prime motivator for me any more. I had the goal of making $100k per year and reached it a few years ago. I've made considerably less in the past and don't mind making less again. While I still enjoy teaching, I'm finding that I don't have the patience that I once did. I keep it in check though. I'm thinking I want to take a shot at being a dean or a vice president. CMS Author Craig Vecchione Posted September 18, 2008 CMS Author Share Posted September 18, 2008 Be sure you're not being selfish with this. While you may not mind making less (a feeling you can't fully appreciate until you've gone from "more" to "less"....trust me), your family may not have the same opinion. My concern is that in this market, it may not be a case of not making as much, but of not making anything.
Members Bass8987
I would wait till after you get your PhD. Then, look for a new job as a Dean or VP or whatever.
Members Phantasm
What's wrong? Life going too good and you want to mess it up for yourself? Sometimes we can't see until later that we had it good and life was great at that point in time. SEE IT and ENJOY IT in real time. Trust me. Members Pickdust
I'd wait until you finished school and survey the lay of the land. Personal ambition is a good thing. However, building from an unmoving, solid foundation is your best bet! PD p.s. I've found that doing something for purely monetary reasons is ....well....not very satisfying in the long run. Members Thunderbroom
I'm just getting antsy. I honestly don't think I'll make a move until Summer 2011. Being in the teacher's union, my job is pretty secure. I just don't want to get lazy and complacent. When (if) I move into administration I can be fired at will, and I'm certain I will at some point. I guess I'm just tired of playing it safe.
Members toolbar
stay the course. I do what I do during the week, so I can do what I want to on the weekends. Members mlwarriner
I'm thinking I want to take a shot at being a dean or a vice president. just FYI and FWIW - my guitarist is a college-level instructor/teacher/professor. he's been teaching at places like NAU and CTU (the "for profit" universities) for a while now. he felt he needed the stability of a full-time job, and so when a dean's position opened up, he went for it. eventually, he got the job and now he hates it. with all of his heart, he hates being on that side of things, and sincerely wishes he were back in a classroom. but, at least around here, all of the teaching jobs he can get at the college level are adjunct positions without benefits. so he feels pretty well stuck with where he is, because it's full time and has benefits. i guess what i'm saying is to make damned sure you're ready to be out of the classroom before getting out of the classroom. my $.
